I would rather live in a cardboard box in Tucson than commute THREE
HOURS PER DAY(!!!)

What about y'all?

PHILADELPHIA - To the list of extreme sports, add extreme commuting:
those who travel 90 minutes or more on the trek to work.

Nationally, only 2 percent of workers log those kind of one-way
commuting times, but their numbers are growing, according to a 2003
Census Bureau survey released Wednesday.

In New York City and Baltimore, 5.6 percent of commuters spent 90
minutes or more on the trip into work; elsewhere, 5 percent of
commuters in Riverside, Calif., and 3 percent of commuters in
Philadelphia and Los Angeles spent an hour-and-a-half on the one-way
commute.

It's only going to get worse... housing prices near urban areas (esp.
DC) are going crazy.

I remember when I first moved to this area, I lived in Fair Lakes and
ended up accepting a job near College Park.  It's about a 45 minute
drive under good conditions, but quite often ended up taking 90 minutes
or more due to congestion.

The former Governor of Massachusetts lived in Williamstown,
close to Albany and as far away from her office in the State
House in Boston as she be could without leaving the state.
She was much closer to Albany.  Her commute was over two
hours per day.  She had a State Police driver, and once had
the police fly her home because she didn't want to wait in
traffic.

I can't imagine having to commute that much.  I have a friend who
drives an hour and a half each way every day to and from work.  It has
nothing to do with real estate prices or anything, she just likes the
area she lives in now and thinks it's worth the commute.  That's mind
boggling to me.

It is to me, also, but sometimes it does work out.

One of my clients had an office in Tustin.  They hired a new software
engineering manager who lived in Carlsbad. Apparently he had a pretty
nice house, right on the beach, etc. etc. so he would commute over an
hour each way twice per day. Had he sold his house and moved to The
OC, he would have been royally screwed when the company closed down
that office less than a year later. Instead, he kept his nice house
and got another job in San Diego.

I'd rather live in the sticks in GA and commute 20 mins to work round
trip. Oh, wait. I do that now....   ;-)

Up until a month ago, I commuted 2 hours each way from NJ to NYC.  I took
trains rather than driving.  Driving would have been unbearable.  At one
point, after the WTC came down, I took 2 trains and a ferry each way.  I
rationalized it by saying I was doing it for my family, but my family is
much happier now that I'm commuting 20 minutes each way.  I'm glad the
nightmare is over.

Some people commute longer!  A while back the NY times had an article on
people who live in Pennsylvania and commute to NYC every day.  The cheap
initial price of a house lured the folks out to PA.   As the price of living in
NYC goes up, I can see the numbers of people commuting ridiculous distances
going up.  I'm lucky and my commute is only 20 minutes.
