Left lane is NOT for speeding

bigtvdaddy@hotmail.com - 07 Apr 2005 23:59 GMT LLB's who are not certified law enforcement officers have no business trying to be cops.
Keep right, except to pass, even if the passer is exceeding the speed limit.
Leave law enforcement to the police and the courts.
Wunnuy - 08 Apr 2005 00:14 GMT I'd like to point out a CA law for some of the nimrods who think it's okay to set their own speed limit in the left lane. If your speeding and someone comes up behidn you wants you to move, you HAVE TO MOVE. He can get a speeding ticket, you can get a speeding ticket and YOU can get a failure to yeild ticket, believe it not. (I taught traffic school for a few years).

Do you >>>have the patience to let the car in front you pass the car he's [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > passing the driver doing 55 when the guy doing 120 is a half mile > behind. At 40 MPH (the difference between 70 and 120) it will take 45 seconds to cover a half mile, and at 15 MPH (the difference between 55 and 70) it takes 30 seconds to cover 1/8 mile (a rough estimate of how long you need to be in the passing lane to complete a pass - this is relative to the car in the right lane, not actual road distance) so there isn't a problem. However, it's clear that some posters to this thread (not necessarily pointing any fingers in your direction, mind you, just making an observation) are unable to accurately judge speed, distance, or both.
IRL, I would say that my handwaving math is conservative, if traffic is light you should not have to take 30 seconds to pass a single car. 1/8 mile is a lot of clearance, 100 yards is more like it really, which would allow you to complete the pass in about 15 seconds (110 yards is roughly 1/16 mile, running track in high school helps in discussions like this later in life <G>) less if you speed up a little.

Assuming that (A) you refer to imperial yards and statute miles and (B) things have not changed since Miss Pollock taught me about them four decades back, the "roughly" is inappropriate.

> Roughly? > > Assuming that (A) you refer to imperial yards and statute miles > and (B) things have not changed since Miss Pollock taught me > about them four decades back, the "roughly" is inappropriate. There are 1760 yards per mile. Divide that by 16 to get 110 yards. I'd say that ±10 yards is consistent with the definition of "roughly" in terms of estimates.
Arif Khokar - 12 Apr 2005 05:34 GMT >>> ... 110 yards is roughly 1/16 mile ...
>> Roughly? >> >> Assuming that (A) you refer to imperial yards and statute miles >> and (B) things have not changed since Miss Pollock taught me >> about them four decades back, the "roughly" is inappropriate.
> There are 1760 yards per mile. Divide that by 16 to get 110 yards ... Sorry. For some reason, I was reading the original statement as "100 yards is roughly 1/16 mile," instead of 110.

> Who's cutting off the faster driver? The guy doing 70 starting > passing the driver doing 55 when the guy doing 120 is a half mile > behind. A speed differential of 50 mph in 3600 seconds translates to a half mile in 36 seconds.
Giving about 200 feet behind the car you're passing, 15 feet for the car's length itself, and 200 feet ahead of the car before moving back to the right lane, it would take about 20 seconds to complete the passing maneuver with a 15 mph differential.
Therefore, if the faster driver caught up with that guy, he must have cut him off.

While it is true that while one is passing one is usually also faster traffic, one can also be faster traffic while not passing (in which case one should still be in the right lane).

Dave - 08 Apr 2005 08:24 GMT What's funny? In Cali, you can (and if caught by a CHP, usually will) be ticketed for causing cars to pass on the right. The cars passing on the right on freeways can also be ticketed, I forget the law they cite, but CHP can and do issue tickets for it, even at or under the speed limit.
I'm glad, even though I don't speed more than 1-2 mph over the limit. (No speedometer is flawless AFAIK, so I assume I'm a little over/under the limit no matter what.)
I'm in no hurry, so I just stay off to the right. There's nothing that pisses me off more though than when some dumbass has to block the left lane and make people almost hit me to pass them.
Yeah, I try to slow down a little to give them a bigger gap, but if the dumbass LLB would just move right things would be a heluva lot safer for me, the law-abiding citizen.
So Saint Judy, stop being a left lane bitch and make the road safer for those of us that follow the f.cking laws you hold so dearly. I drive for a living, it's not worth losing my job or paying more for insurance cause a cop saw me breaking an arbitrary limit, so I follow them.
If you ever caused my car to get hit while being a LLB, you better hope my car can't chase you down and ram you off the road. At that point, you've shown law doesn't matter, so why should I worry about assault charges for putting you in a coma?
A real idea would be to start living a good example for others, maybe show up at some city council meetings with consistant ideas in order, and suggest realistic changes to the law.
You appear to be a troll (who makes me laugh) instead though, so I'm sure you wouldn't waste your time doing something constructive rather than posting crap for me to laugh at after a few drinks. (Since I'm not going out driving at this point...)

You've definitely got the right idea - your safety is far more important than the scant few seconds you lose by slowing down to create a safe gap. You might also consider speeding up temporarily - same net effect, but no loss for you. If done intelligently, your risk of a speeding ticket is insignificant.
>So Saint Judy, stop being a left lane bitch Aunt Judy is not a LLB IRL. He only play one on USENET.

Perhaps. but if you try to appoint yourself as a traffic policeman and drive slow in the fast lane forcing people to go around you then you have only increased the danger. Is that what you want?
Keep the speeders all in the left lane and life on the freeway will be much safer. In Germany its illegal to pass on the right when driving down the freeway. Its equally illegal to be in the left lane when not passing slower traffic. It should be that way everywhere.

The passing lane is for people going less than the speed limit to pass other people going less than the speed limit. If you are going faster than the speed limit, tap the brakes until the problem corrects itself.

I'm not sure what idiotic planet you live on, son, but in my neck of the woods traffic is usually at about 7-10 miles over the speed limit _normally_. If you block traffic, some people in the DC area have been known to take potshots at other drivers.
