Dumb c.nt Gets Creamed While Yacking on her Cell Phone

Scott en Aztl?n - 14 Apr 2005 03:12 GMT
As reported by the WGN News at Nine tonight:

A stupid c.nt, who was talking to her husband on her cell phone at the
time, crashed through a downed crossing arm and ran directly into the
path of an oncoming Metra train. She was dragged two blocks and died.

Look for a ban on the use of cell phones while driving to be passed in
Chicago very soon.

How many people die each year trying to run train crossings?  This was a
problem long before cell phones.

They'll need a lot more than this to pass a ban.

But how many drove *through* the arm?

You have never been to Chicago, obviously.

Years ago Chicago banned having more than 2 pets because an old lady
died and her 30 or so cats were left to starve.  So now fish tanks are
illegal in Chicago.

You must not read the Trib much.

That was tried last week and postponed.  One Alderman was concerned that the
cops would pick off drivers coming back from the adjacent suburb on errands.

You're right - it's not easy to find a copy here in SoCal.

Last week was before this accident.

Tell me, will CPD give a parking ticket (or a Denver Boot) to a
suburban car that's just in town for an errand? Will they write a
speeding ticket for a suburban driver?

That Alderman might have won the battle, but he's going to lose the
war.

Booting isn't done by the CPD.  It's done by the Dept. of Rev who has
specially equipped vans to find cars.

And speeding tickets are only regularly tracked on certain streets and LSD.

I think he was more concerned with people getting caught "crossing the
border" then making sure the law only targets suburbanites.

The cell phone ban is long overdue.  Radios should also be taken out
of cars.  110 americans killed and thousands injured EVERY DAY and all
because people drive carelessly.

Are you serious?  Do you have any studies to back up the idea that radios
cause traffic accidents- actually listening to the radio? There are some
studies that show that fiddling with stereo controls contributes to
accidents (especially if the person takes their eyes off the road), and that
loud stereos might contribute as well, but actually listening to the radio
causing an accident?  I'm very sceptical.

Also, a frequent bit of advice is to turn on the stereo on very long
drives if the driver becomes bored or fatigued.

Are you serious?  One of the overwhelming causes of accidents you read about in
the paper is from some moron tuning the radio and not paying attention to what
the hell they are doing.  My good friend was hit and seriously injured from one
of these tuners who ran a red light and T-boned my friend's truck.   I can't
imagine anyone disputing that the radio is a dangerous distraction.

That said... we can't go about, banning everything that is a distraction unless
we want to make driving an incrediblely unpleasant experience.   I think its
one of those kinds of risks we just have to put up with if we want a decent
quality of life.   Just be more careful, don't give the other guy the
opportunity to involve you in his accident.

And, before banning anything, the unintended consequences should be studied to
find out what negative outcomes would occur from the ban.  Cars with no radios
cannot know, for example, that they are running straight toward a tornado, a
fact that I learned from the radio a few years ago, nor can they know where all
the backups on the freeway are locally.  The boredom from having no
entertainment in the car _might_ cause people to daydream and maybe go to sleep
at the wheel, esp. late at night.  There's too much rushing to ban things
without considering the side effects of it - ban cell phones in cars, lotsa
people (esp. me) would no longer have any use for the thing.  (Don't need it at
home, it doesn't work _inside_ the mall, can't use it in the theater where I
spend a lot of the time that I am not at home, don't use it on the floor of the
gym I belong to - I can't think of anywhere I'd make much use of it other than
in the car.  Things are so far apart here that _most_ of the time I spend away
from the house is either at work, or driving, and I have a phone at work.)
With _less_ cell phones in society, the reporting of accidents and criminal
activity might suffer, causing more harm than good overall.

Study the consequences before banning things, that's all.

Operating and listening to the radio is not the same as using a cell
phone. It is a habit or procedure that has been well established over
decades and it is only whack jobs such as you who would make an absurd
statement that it is "one of the overwhelming causes of accidents."
You're one unlucky friend does not a statistic make.

You might be late to the party but the consequences have been studied.
The people pulling the most bone-headed  moves on the road are those on
their hand-held cell phones. The proposed Chicago ban is not for
hand-free phones, and you would know this if you had been listening to
the radio instead of pissing off everybody else on the road with you
poor driving while on the phone.

You also made the wingie mistake of taking what the OP said and
exaggerating it into a blanket ban on cell phone usage. When somebody
says "ban cell phones while driving" it is accepted that usage such as
pulling over and reporting crimes, or handsfree usage, is still OK. The
issue has been debated for a long enough time there is a common
understanding about what the phrase means, and the proposed rule is
clear on that. And how do you get your Limba if you're always on the
phone and not listening to the radio you pseudo-wacko-lib?

You should have a radio you can work without taking your eyes off the
road (which is another reason I think navigational computers in cars are
decidedly a double-edged sword).   Also, not excessively fooling with the
radio is good advice.  I was riding around with a certain aquaintance who
changed the radio station constantly and fooled around with it.   Finally I
told him "make up your mind or turn it off".

Here in Florida fooling around with the AC is pretty much a requirement-
unless you have a fancy computer controlled A/C system, you'll need alot
more AC in the summer when you start the car than when it finally cools off
and starts turning into an icebox.

This is an intelligent observation--why isn't it obvious to designers?  Car
reviewers take ease of sightless use into account when writing their
reports, so it's not like vehicle dashboard designers aren't hip to the
notion.  We shouldn't have to divert all our attention to working the
radio/AC while driving.

It was addressed long ago; many car models have had steering wheel radio
controls and automatic climate control for several years now.

The problem for me is that the factory steering wheels are
always heavy clunky things. My Momo wheel is well under half
the weight of the factory Nissan one, and it's far easier to
grip and turn.

I'd rather have the extra distraction (which I can control, of
course) of operating dashboard controls, and have the light
steering wheel.

Reading it again, that statement didn't say what I meant...  I guess I got a
little carried away.  However, I'd say fiddling with the radio is a
"significant" factor in auto accident occurrence.

Studies I've heard reported on the radio and TV all come to the conclusion that
cell phone use is _waaaay_ down for most other forms of distraction causing
accidents.

>The proposed Chicago ban is not for
>hand-free phones, and you would know this if you had been listening to

Hands-free is something else that needs studied.  Some automatically think that
it is safer, but studies I've heard of say that there's no difference - its the
concentration that is the factor that detracts from driving, and the
concentration needed to talk hands free is the same as the concentration needed
to talk while holding the phone.  I wouldn't mind seeing more studies, tho.

>You also made the wingie mistake of taking what the OP said and
>exaggerating it into a blanket ban on cell phone usage.

Because I don't believe anything is gained by inserting the requirement for
hands free operation.  I believe we should either go with the premise that its
distracting and we're going to 1) educate people to do these two things at once
more safely or 2) ban 'em althogether.

Not sure what "limba" is - thought you meant Rush Limbaugh, until you say you
think I'm a liberal.  I'm the opposite of both liberal and conservative - I'm a
libertarian - that feels he has to vote republican because its the best chance
of not winding up with more useless/stupid gun control laws. a pet issue with
me.

Very simple, davey, the radio did not cause your friends accident, the
moron who had no concept about how to pay attention to the task at
hand did.

OF COURSE we should judge her by the last action that got her killed.

Not!  A great teacher does not drive around railroad crossing gates.
Remember, what she does during her free time is pretty much what she
does in front of the children she teaches, and her obvious
irresponsibility in this situation pretty much proves she is just as
irresponsible in the classroom.

If she goes around, she's consciously trying to get on the tracks when a
train is coming, that's pretty stupid.  If she drives through, she's not
trying, she's just ignorant.  Dumb vs. Ignorant.  Malice vs. Negligence.

Here's one way of looking at it.

Ignorant: "People die everyday. But I won't."

Dumb: "People die everyday. But I won't, because
they are DUMB and I am SMART."

It is easy to see that 99% of the Darwin Award committee
falls in the latter category (but we knew it anyway, since
they elected Scupid as their current spokesman).

Probably been a while since he got to call someone else dumb.
I'll bet he can't do those petty displays of power at work
anymore. It's highly intelligent (by Dumbaztlan standards)
to have figured out an opposition-free way to call someone
DUMB! Congratulations to Scupid!

Smeski was right in the first place.  You have to remember that this is
the dumb f.ck out in lala land who thinks it is his right to see every
last bit of personal suffering people experience so long as it happens
out in public, if you do recall.  He's a simple minded coward by all
appearances.

He posts in chi.gen in the middle of winter about the climate here like
a teenager picking on his little pricked friends, oblivious to the fact
that we like it here.
He goes on crossposting binges, even though he knows Geoff will freak
and most thinking people don't like the confusion they cause.  It's like
talking even when mom tells him to shut up.
He uses this tragedy to call a woman a "c.nt" and then bitches when
someone removes the term.  Think he uses the word around his mommy?

What a clever word, "nymshift". You finally cleared the Darwin
line with that one, Scupid. With an IQ like that, if you die
from a disastrous accident you will clearly remember not to
be in public.

One less death for your "Darwin Award" committee buddies to
go into screaming fits of terror over ...

Nono.  Tushar can only dream of being:

ADAM H. KERMAN, LORD AND MASTER OF USENET

but it's a good dream, so he can keep it.

The news this morning said she drove "around" the gates, not through
them.  In either case, you are 100% correct on her being a stupid

I feel sorry... for all the innocent people who were delayed as a result

Too late for that, unfortunately. One wonders what sorts of things
someone who would drive around lowered crossing gates has been
teaching the children in her class, not to mention her own children.
It seems pretty certain that good judgement couldn't have been one of
them...

The woman had been talking to her husband on a cellular phone at the
time, Dennis said. She drove around lowered gates at the railroad
crossing and her SUV was hit and dragged for two blocks, he said.

Described as hardworking and dedicated to her pupils, school Principal
Donald Butler said Quintero was always friendly and outgoing.

"She was always talking," Butler said.
