The Detroit Free Press spells it out for those who *refused* to listen
before.

The end is near for Ford and GM in America.

I wonder if Chrysler would buy them out...wait, forget that, too much
union labour promises and benefits are like cement shoes on a swimmer.

For the first time ever, more GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles were made
in Canada than in America.

Besides that, GM's quality ratings on every vehicle except the Cadillac
and Corvette lines are complete CRAP and they look so damn ugly, people
are voting with their wallets.

R.I.P. greedy unions; your cash cows are off to market.

Heheyup!

I'm going to LAUGH MY a.s OFF when all those union f.cks (note
non-misogynist pejorative term) drive GM and Ford into bankruptcy and
lose their cushy jobs AND their fat pensions. Those who are competent
enough will find work at Honda, Toyota, BMW, or Mercedes plants - but
they will be NON-UNION. Suddenly their job security will depend on
MERIT instead of a protectionist racket. As for the rest of them, the
closest they'll get to an automotive job again will be working at the
local car wash. No more throwing an empty beer can into the fender
area just before welding it shut just for laughs for those guys...

SUCKS TO BE THEM! BWAAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAA!!!!

But you know what the media will do, don't you?

There will be no lesson learned here.

Get the story wrong, like they always do?

Yep. First they will blame Bush the younger. (despite this being 3 decades in the
making) Then they will blame the greedy, evil CEOs. (at least that will be
somewhat right). They will never blame the greedy labor unions nor will they
cover the management culture of idiotcy.

Germany is even worse (stronger labor laws, and their unions get seats
on company boards).  If Daimler-Chrysler keeps its doors open it will be
because they've moved to Poland or the Czech Republic -- and even then
they will be hurting because of Germany's plant-closing laws.

I agree.  Let the UAW go try to organize workers in Shanghai and
Bangalore -- or even Warsaw -- and see how far they get.  Workers over
there know better than to kill the goose that lays golden eggs.  The US
"working class" will be much sadder before they learn that lesson, but
learn it they will.

In china there is only one legal labor union and it is controlled by the
communist party. Anyone from the UAW would likely find themselves in prison if
they aren't simply shot on the spot.

...at which point they'd be put right back on the assembly line ;)

This obviously has something to do with the sales reports that came out
recently.  Has Ford or GM put out any cars recently that have been big
hits on the market?  I know Diamler-Chrysler had some hits over the
last year and should again have one with the upcoming release of the
Charger.  I wonder if this has anything to do with it.

Ford's new Mustang is doing well I hear.  Their new "500" not so well.  GM
is doing better with the Cadillac's, but not well enough.  GM's other "new"
lines seem to all be a flop.

I forgot about the Mustang.  Everything else they seem to put out
hasn't done nearly as well as the new line that Dodge has running.  The
Magnum, 300C and Charger all seem to be outperforming new releases from
other manufacturers.

That Mercedes C-class platform(Magnum, 300C, Charger) are all made in
Canada.

The reviews are all raving about how you can get a monster V8 HEMI with
Mercedes 4-Matic and all the QUALITY that comes with the German-based
product.

GM has so many faceless pieces of crap vehicles right now, they will
need a major restructuring or they will die.

Indeed.  I recently owned my first and last GM (Mexican import '97 Suburban)
product ... the thing cost me more in repairs than the previous lineage of a
Subaru wagon, a Honda Accord, a Toyota pickup and a Mitsubishi Montero
combined.

What was most irksome was the nature of the failures; design flaws that had
been present for years but which manifest themselves beyond the warranty
period expires so they were not OEM addressed.  Aftermarket vendors like
Sonnax are making a nice business for themselves with their $65 sleeve kits
to mitigate the TCC solenoid defect in the 4L60E transmission ...  Sundry
letters and emails to GM/Chevy on this tawdry state of affairs went
completely unacknowledged.

We now own two very nice *made in the USA* Toyotas, a Sequoia for the missus
and a Tundra DC for me and couldn't be happier with our vehicles.  The only
higher level of joy I've experienced relating to a vehicle was seeing that
G(enerally) M(ediocre) Suburban sitting on the dealer lot in the rearview
mirror.  Methinks GM as a corporation is getting a well-deserved
comeuppance.

Good reliability and value to ya,
VLJ
