How much you wanna bet he hit the gas when he meant to hit the brake?

http://www.local10.com/news/4799446/detail.html

Police said John Allen Walton, 63, of Pembroke Pines, was speeding
south on Interstate 75 when the car left the highway for unknown
reasons. The Corvette crashed into a 36th Street flyover bridge
support column head on, bursting into flames.

maybe he was trying to pass a *really* old sloth on the right hand side and
just went a little too nuts with the gas?  ;-)

Unknown??  Like hell.  The article says he was speeding   and it's good
he killed himself and only himself.

Speeding doesn't magically make cars leave the road and crash into
things.

If it did, their would be a thousand times more accidents than there are.

Trying to debate with trolls doesn't automatically get them to
understand reason.

If it did, they would be very few trolls on usenet.

Speeders don't have accidents.  They have crashes, usually into some
innocent person. Fortunately, this psycho killed only himself.

Try and use your brain for once.

The vast majority of people out there "speed" -- they exceed the posted
limit, but they don't have crashes.

That's *exactly* how everyone's going to feel when you get into an
"accident" and off yourself.

Wow, think of it: your life began as an accident, and will end as an
accident.

You missed 'XXX' then?  If the technology exists to make motorcycles leap into
the air on command, why can't it be extended to cars?  It was a Corvette, you
know.

You've obviously never seen "Speed Racer." All he had to do was push
the 'A' button on his steering column. ;)

His age had absolutely nothing to do with it.  That guy was travelling
way too fast for conditions as the description shows:  The Corvette was
traveling so fast that the front of the car is molded onto the abutment
and the rear wheels of the Corvette are off the ground, police said.

If you knew anything about Corvettes and what happens to them when they
hit solid immovable objects like this one, you'd easily see that he was
probably traveling at about the speed limit when he crashed.  My guess,
from witness statements, would be a heart attack.  Same thing happened
to a GT1 driver at Road America not too long ago.  Straight off Turn 12
at racing speed with no apparent attempt to brake or steer.  He was
probably dead before he hit the tire wall.  We can only wish the same
for this guy.  You, OTOH, ought to suffer for your ignorance ...

The only semi-hard facts about the what and why are from the opinions
of the police quoted in the story.  If they say the car was going at a
high rate of speed then I think that is pretty reliable information.

Huh?  The last speeding ticket I got was tossed by the judge because the cop
who wrote it was unfamiliar with the law.  -Dave

Except I don't think they exactly said that.  Most headon crashes the
police see are attenuated by *some* braking or skidding.  This one
apparenty wasn't, so the impact was more severe than most.  I think
*that's* what they're saying.

> > Police and reliable do not belong in the same sentence.

Well, as Gary Lewis and the Playboys once said, "Count me in" with that
'minority'.  IME, most police officers are largely uneducated in the
nuances of speed analysis - especially when a 'Vette or other
plastic-bodied car is involved.  This one has to be dealt with in terms
of crash damage *only* since there were no tire marks (which can be
very good indicators of speed).  Even those who *are* trained crash
analysis experts have some faulty analyses in their portfolios (BTW,
what ever happened to the one who used to post here?).  I'm sticking
with my contention that this car wasn't going at any "high rate of
speed".  It hit that column at very close to the legal speed limit on
that road.  I'm also sticking with a sudden medical emergency as the
cause.  A 63-year-old guy cruising down the highway in his Corvette
with the top down isn't exactly the classic picture of a suicide risk.

Since you were not there nor do you know the police officer involved I
don't know how you could possibly begin to read someting like that in
to their statement.  You are assuming, and we both know where that can
lead.

You have the same information I do...a short description of the
consequences of an accident with quotes from some unnamed police
officer.  I'm amazed your ability to divine from thin air facts such as
whether he was speeding and what speed his car hit the column at.

Though I rarely agree with DTJ, I think he's hit it a lot closer than

Some (?most?) jurisdictions now require a college degree.  Mine does.
Of course a degree doesn't mean the person has any smarts tho.

Nice try, but one does not a statistic make.

The only jurisdictions that require 4-year degrees are states and a
very few large cities.  The overwhelming majority of police forces
require nothing more than a high school GED.

Damn.  My county seems to only hire drunkards and child molesters.
That must mean that every other cop in the country is a drunkard and
child molester.  At least by your, um, logic.

Our, admittedly small, force of 17 officers all have atleast a BA. And,
if you want to rise above patrol officer, you'd better get your masters
degree. Our chief and the senior sargent are both graduates of the F.B.I.

Actually you probably agree with me more than you know.  I have the

people.  Since I don't recall disagreeing with you much, odds are I
agree with most of what you say.  Which means you agree with me.  So

If you look at the picture slideshow, you get more info:

"Witnesses said the car just drifted off I-75 before it hit the
abutment."
"Police said that a Corvette drifted across lanes and left the
highway."
"FHP troopers said there were no skid marks or brake marks on the
highway."

The last one is the clincher.  I'm willing to bet there was a medical
emergency and the guy lost consciousness, hence excess speed, and no
skid marks OR brake marks.

Possible.

Total non-sequitur.

Unless, of course, this guy was, in fact, Speed Racer, and he had
installed the GRX engine under the hood of his Mach 5 (which the cops
mistook for a Corvette)...

Personally, it seems to me that his steering was the problem.  I doubt
there's any curves on a Florida interstate where it's possible to
drive faster in a Corvette than the _car_ could reasonably handle.
Certainly not there, from the pictures.

Given that he hit the bridge abutment dead-on, I'd suggest suicide.
