10 gb worth of driving...

I finally got around to try to record a little of my driving using my
laptop and a webcam, per Scott's suggestion. Can't say it worked great,
although it was in part my 200 MMX laptop's (running XP Pro) fault which
wasn't quite fast enough. The other problems were shitty sound quality
and mounting the cam. I ended up using a rubber band around the
passenger seat headrest to attach it which worked pretty well. The
downside was that it was impossible to adjust it so that the tach and
speedo was visible and still get a good view of the road. I also need to
get a better mic if I'll be doing any more recordings driving with the
windows down and T-tops off. On the plus side, it was cheap (free!). :-)

Here's a short clip to give you an idea (of the problems..). It's
compressed using a divx codec.

10 points for trying :-P

Might give something similar a go myself one day.  What sort of webcam
were you using?  What software were you using to record it?

Thanks. :-)

It's a Philips webcam, not sure what model. The software I used was a
freeware program I found on the web:

If you do it, let us know. :-)

Some suggestions:

Watching the hair on the top of your head whipping in the wind via
your rearview mirror gets old REALLY quickly. How about aiming the
camera so we can see straight ahead, out through the windshield?

Forget the sound, forget the tach and speedo; just show us the road.

You can also add a soundtrack so that the viewer is not watching in
silence. Kind of like this guy did...

I think that's the radio we hear. Besides, the guy is a shitty driver,
LLB'ing the whole time.

You're really pushing hard for that clip. :-)

I did a recording driving to a neighboring city today, unfortunately the
trip was completely uneventful. Only had to slow down from my cruise
controlled 90 mph twice in the 20 minutes drive.

No, just trying to help. ;)

Here's a little more inspiration for you... ;)

Why not use a cheap (~$300) mini-DV camcorder?!
A laptop-webcam combo is *very* cumbersome.

Yes, but I don't have a mini-DV camcorder, nor do I want to buy one for
this sole purpose. OTOH, I do have both a laptop and a webcam... :-)

Not at all.

The webcam is light enough that a little masking tape holds it
securely to the dash, while the laptop sits on the passenger's seat.

Are you using Microsoft MovieMaker to record?

>Are you using Microsoft MovieMaker to record?

Nope. The webcam (Logitech) came with some video recording software.

Can't say it worked at all.
