This is like that call by latino community leaders a couple of years
ago, telling their latino bretheren to stay home from school and work
on one certain day to "demonstrate latino economic power."

Not that I recall. In fact, I distinctly remember that my lawn was
mowed that day. ;)

This one is a little different than boycotting a particular oil
company. These guys are suggesting not buying gas at ALL instead of
shifting where it's bought. Given a large enough boycott, it could
have a small effect.
Granted, one day isn't going to really do much, given our huge economy.

So, people buy large quantities beforehand, which makes up for the lost
sales the next day, so there really isn't an effect.

true. not that i support this boycott, but at least it does a better job of
doing what the boycott *should* do--that is, reduce usage, albeit
temporarily, rather than shift usage to a different date with no aggregate
effect on overall consumption.
if people took the work boycott to heart (and just stayed home--didn't drive
anywhere) then we would see a drop in consumption on that date.

OTOH, if people simply walked, rode their bikes, carpooled, or took
public transit to work on that day, the same effect would be achieved
but nobody would risk losing their job or any of their pay.

again true... i think the point of the "gasout" is for there to be a
noticeable dif other than just fewer cars on the road. it's supposed to be
fewer people at work.

And hopefully fewer people in the stores also. That's where the
corporations would really be hit.
But, as I suggested a few weeks ago, this needs to ba an ongoing thing -
say a boycott day every week instead of just a oneday boycott and that's
it.

As if Bush isn't pushing the 'free trade' delusion as well.

If everyone rode their bikes to work/school for one week, that could
decrease demand by a bit... however, that would never happen...

Not with about 1500 feet of ascent each way, no.

Is it any coincidence that the day they are calling for is the Friday
before Laborday? Yea, 4 day weekend!
