guys what would you recommend if a total newbie told you fuel economy,
performance and safety are the key points?  comfort and roominess are
of relatively little importance.

I like the Civic but it continues to look flimsy to me.  then again
what do I know?  RSX and Celica both appear a lot sturdier in my eyes
but are they really?  also what kind of power difference would I notice
between the former car's top trim line and those of the latter two?

thx a lot

I'd recommend changing your key points.  You can have fuel economy OR
performance.  Once you decide which of those two you want, get back to us.

But FWIW, I drove a Civic that performed pretty darn well.  -Dave

3 recommends:

1) A4 chassis VW Golf or Jetta TDI.  awesome torque, awesome economy,
nice interior design, materials, and fit/finish.  Does require a little
more care and feeding than a Japanese car, and make sure you can get
Diesel easily in your area before you buy.  I would personally not buy
a new one because the A5 chassis is even bigger than the A4 and also
VWs seem to be on the high end of the price range for the size car you
get.  I had an A4 chassis GTI 1.8T and loved it.  It was a little too
big for me, and I would have traded a little comfort for better
handling, but overall it was a great car to just hop in and drive
halfway across the country.  It got "OK" gas mileage; but if you can
live with a little less in the acceleration department the TDI can get
>40 MPG easily.  I would not buy a base model gas motor VW, the old 2.0 is archaic at best and too small for the weight of the car.

2) whatever the small Hyundai is these days.  Performance is probably
not up to par but you can't beat the 10 year warranty and they are
cheap.  Quality has supposedly improved markedly since they first came
to the US; I know several people who have newer Hyundais and they love
them.

3) Toyota Corolla.  The quintissential "appliance" car.  It's not
exciting, but it's a Toyota Corolla.

good luck,

I'll add that the Hyundai styling has also come a long way.  I recently saw a
new Hyundai, I forget which model, that looked pretty good.

Recommend that you read the reviews on Edmunds.com and visit the
make-specific forums on the same website.

A Civic seems in my mind to be a completely different car than a
Celica, so it may be difficult to compare them.

thx for the input, all.  any thoughts on which of these you'd rather be
in when an accident occurs?

Probably a VW but to tell you the truth I don't give such things much
weight when it comes to making car purchasing decisions.  I would
rather buy the car with the best suspension, brakes, tires, etc. and
plan on avoiding a wreck altogether.

I know what you mean.  then again it's only possible to control your
own driving ability.

What you do goes a long way to avoiding an accident.  If you can spot the
idiots on the road and keep well away from them, you've won half the battle.
A car with plenty of power to get away from those idiots on the road is a big
plus.

The smarter thing to do is figure out which is better equiped to avoid
accidents in the first place.

I'd say he was dreaming.

Performance and fuel economy are mutually exclusive; the more you have
of one, the less you have of the other.

The Acura RiceX *is* a Civic.

What the heck, I'll play too.
