North Miami Beach city worker kills self on flight to L.A.

BY DAVID OVALLE
dovalle@MiamiHerald.com

The man accused of torching a North Miami-Dade car dealership because
he was unhappy with the deal he got on a car killed himself aboard a
flight from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles, officials confirmed
Thursday.

Gerald Georgettis was found in a bathroom aboard United Flight 209,
which made an emergency landing at Denver International Airport on
Wednesday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

His death was first reported Thursday morning by Miami Herald news
partner WFOR-CBS4.

It was unclear how he killed himself, but Denver police stressed no
other passengers were in danger. CBS 4 reported he hanged himself. In
a case that drew widespread attention in South Florida, police say
that on Saturday Georgettis was upset with the deal he got on a Ford
Escape at the Metro Ford dealership at 900 NW Seventh Ave.

Georgettis plowed the new car into the showroom glass, then set the
business on fire, Miami-Dade police. He worked for the city of North
Miami Beach and handed in his resignation on Monday.

''I'm shocked. I still can't believe it,'' North Miami Beach Mayor
Raymond Marin told The Miami Herald Thursday morning. ``I know him as
nothing more than an nice guy. I can't say anything bad about him. I
don't know what happened.''

Yeah, I'm sure all those passengers on the plane were probed by aliens

People are always shocked that some of us actually want to die.
Idiots.

Well, seeing as how self-preservation is one of any animal's most
fundamental instinct, I'd say you're the idiot.

I suspect that if someone had grabbed this guy before he was able
to board that airplane and eventually off himself, and held his
face in a sinkful of water in an attempt to drown him, he'd have
fought just as hard as any of the rest of us.

The only ID check I usually get is by the lowly paid person just before
the TSA check point. They can't even validate whether the BP matches a
current flight.

Or even whether the name on the BP matches the one on the ID. My wife
was issued another PAX's BP by mistake one time; she got all the way
through security without anyone from the TSA ever noticing. When she
realized she had the wrong BP, she went to the counter at the gate and
asked for the right BP; the clerk at the counter informed the TSA, who
promptly went apeshit. They wanted to ground the plane and re-screen
everyone. Finally, after a long argument, the TSA supervisor saw
reason and let the flight proceed without re-screening everyone.

Too bad they don't check for psychopaths like you and shoot them
on the spot.  It would make aviation safer and life better for the whole world.

The internet just exposes the kooks, because they've been around all
along.  And the apparent anonyminity (at least anonymous to those who
can't subpeona records) gives them that much more power.

Cops can go into chat rooms posing as a 13 year old girl and pick up a

Now that was really stupid.  Torching the dealership didn't hurt the
salesmen one bit.  Their insurance will cover everything and the
salesmen get a paid vacation from working until the remodeling.  If he
really wanted to get them in the pants where it counts he could have
torched the salesmens personal cars and houses.  Most home insurance
doesn't cover arson.

Maybe, but I doubt it.  If they have earned vacation they likely can use
it.  Otherwise, they'll probably be unemployed while the renovation takes
place.  Of course, the employer may want to keep his employees, so may pay
them anyway.

> I though many US salesmen worked on commission only.

They do, though there is vacation in the bundle too.  A few friends are
in the business and get a few weeks vacation a year. They're paid the
average commission they received for the previous year.

Highly unlikely.  Sales work is always commisioned.  Any other type of
compensation plan denotes the "salesperson" is a mere "clerk".  If
"paid vacation" is considered a period in which one may worry
themselves sick over how the bills will be paid while fighting for
unemployment compensation and/or the insurance company... you might be
right.

What emergency?  HE WAS DEAD!  Is a stranger's suicide a reason for a whole
planeload full of people to be set down in Denver (probably didn't even bring
their skis) rather than wherever it was going?  Christ, some suicides are real

That would be a bit much, but I'm sure they could have put him in a plastic
bag and stowed him in with the luggage.  Seems a bit callous, but since
neither we nor the passengers knew him, no big deal.

They're right.  Why should a lot of strangers be inconvenienced in any way at
all because some jerk needs to use his own death to annoy people?  Do YOU feel
guilty and remorseful because a stranger throws himself in front of a train
and makes everybody hang around uselessly for hours and hours?  Christ, scoop

How would they have gotten him there?  There's no easy access to
the cargo hold from the passenger compartment of an airliner.

They could've let him cool his heels (along with the rest of his
body) in the lavatory, but that would've rendered one of the lavs
unusable.

Or they could've removed the body and belted it into a vacant seat.
But with most flights being packed to the rafters ever since dereg-
ulation, there may not have been a vacant seat available.  Or if
there had been, it might've been in a row that was otherwise occupied.
Now, sitting next to a dead guy wouldn't bother me, as long as I had
the aisle seat -- at least he wouldn't be a talker -- but it would
make a lot of folks uneasy.

Hey, I know!  They could've dragged him up front and strapped him
into the cockpit jumpseat.  The pilots could've retended that they
were being given a line check.

Put him in the seat next to those severely obese people
who have been quoted on this NG recently, whinging
about angry they are that other passengers object to
being crowded by the overflowing flab.

He won't complain if their huge arse takes up half his

Sure.  I've been in plenty of nastier restrooms that *live* people
had used.

Or they could've removed the body and belted it into a vacant seat.

Decomposition is unlikely to set in during an interval that's typical

You mean there's NO place on one of those big planes that a body could be
stashed temporarily?  I find that hard to believe.

Leave the cadaver in the John.  There are more than one on any flight I've
taken.  Maybe the captain could anounce that "due to unforseen
circumstanes, there won't be any more applications to the "mile-high" club
taken".  ...or maybe just turn on the "fasten seatbelt" sign.

No place that hasn't already been mentioned, and that has its own
disadvantages.  On a widebody a stiff could be stashed in one of
the downstairs galleys, but who'd want a dead body in the same
space where food and drink are prepared?  That'd be gnarsti.

Some of the newer widebodies that are used on transoceanic flights
have crew rest areas in out-of-the-way places.  That'd be a possi-
bility, I suppose.  (Haven't 747s always had a room with a couple
of bunks just aft of the cockpit, or am I thinking of C-5s?)

I doubt if it would have been necessary to tell them.  Or perhaps they could
have taken a vote on whether to eject him in an uninhabited area.  Lots of

Many nautical customs are carried over into the world of aviation......

Burials at sea require the services of the holder of the largely honorific
ship's billet of "Sailmaker", who sews the shroud in which the decedent is
"enshrouded" (with - no cannonballs today - an inert 5" projectile or
suitable weight betwixt the corpse's knees) prior to immersal.
Traditionally, the sailmaker's last stitch passes through the nose of the
'deceased", a carryover from the days of  cruder medical techniques, thought
to be a sure fire method of determining whether death had actually occurred,
since a big needle through the nose might reveive fakers or the lightly
unconscious.

Besides, who aboard an a/c would (a) have a bosun's pipe or (b) know the
appropriate pipe for "Full fathom five" or in this case "Several miles
high..."

"Sheriff, I wuz a'walking down to the mailbox, and this guy jest landed right
in the road with a loud splop...."
