Here's the situtation. Terrible icy roads this morning. Pulled into a
2 lane, 55mph road by my house, it was at a near stand still. Was
creeping up the road at about 5-10 mph, stop and go. I decided to turn
around, because the next light a *2 miles* away, so I didn't know if
there was a wreck up ahead or what. I waited until I got up to the
next intersection, which happened to be a sidestreet to a sub-division.
I put my blinker on, and started to make a left into the sub. There
were no oncoming cars. I'm halfway through the turn, when the guy in
front of me decides to make the same turn I'm make. He doesn't see me,
and I lay on the horn. He shoots me a dirty look.
Was I deserving of that? I was at the proper place for the turn. It's
not like I drove up the wrong way to get to the sidestreet sooner.

You were in the right. correct location, first to signal, only one to
signal?

I believe he did signal immediately as he turned, so I was already
halfway done.

In the UK at least you are meant to signal *in advance* of the manouvre.
Signalling *as you turn* is effectively useless/redundant. They guy was an idiot.

IMO, you were in the right (presuming that the guy infrout of you made
no signal to turn before you started your maneuver). From your
description, you were in the proper place to make the turn, signalled
your intention and made your move. SInce you were already well into your
maneuver, your were in the right. If the other guy wanted to make the
same move, he should have waited untill you were out of the
intersection.

Your only mistake was underestimating the stupidity of your fellow road
users, then being amazed/bewildered when said stupidity was put on full
display :-)

Usually a dirty look, the traffic finger, hurled invective, etc.
translate into "You caught me with my hand in the cookie jar and I
instinctively react to that with a face-saving display of aggression."
Think nothing of it.
As for the horn, sounds to me like you used it for exactly the right
purpose (warning) and soon enough to keep somebody from doing something
that could've ended badly.
