suggestions on a 95mph ticket in Washington State?

I was driving South on Hwy 97 in Washington State (aka BFE, Washington)
coming down out of Sadus Pass just outside of Goldendale. On a long,
straight, downhill stretch, I passed a suburban. My '94 Explorer has
236,000 miles on it, so it struggles to accelerate - I floored it to
get around this suburban. Upon getting back into my lane (2 lane
highway) I noticed the noses of a couple police cruisers sticking out
of a turn-off with 10 ft burms on either side so I slammed on my
brakes. The cop pulled out behind the suburban that I passed and maybe
a mile later, he was comin up on me so I pulled over. He told me that
he clocked me at 95 while I was passing, but I didn't slow down when I
got back into my lane. I never told him how fast I thought I was going,
nor did I flat out say that I knew I was speeding. The cop chit-chatted
with me for a bit about my camera on the front seat, only asked for my
license and registration (didn't ask for insurance... strange) and
wrote me a ticket for 95 in a 60, warning me that the judge, if I were
to contest the ticket, was a hardass.  I can't defer the ticket, as
it's more than 20mph over the speed limit. I figure a traffic lawyer
costs about the same as the ticket (280 bucks), so that's my best bet.
Even though I haven't had any tickets/accidents in the last 3 years,
Pempco WILL drop my insurance policy... because they're pemco. Any
suggestions?

I would say bite the bullet...........
or go to the court on the assigned date and hope that the cop doesnt
show up and your ticket will not be valid because the cop was not there
to defend it.....

Well, you got to be out of your mind doing 95 on 97...  It sounds as if
you're going to be paying for high-risk insurance for a while as a
result.

1.  How much time did you save?
2.  Was it worth what it's going to cost?

Completing a pass on a two-lane?  In some places the sightlines are
*miles* long.

In WA, you're allowed to exceed the speed limit when completing a pass.
If you slow back down to the speed limit after returning to your lane,
there shouldn't be a problem.

Look up the appropriate RCW section, have it in hand when you contest
the ticket, and point it out to the judge.

Good luck.

E.P. (in East BFE, on the Palouse.)

Satus, not Sadus, berm not burm.

Learn to spell?

If you go to court, you can probably beat it:  1)  you're allowed to
exceed the limit to pass in WA state, 2) the law doesn't say how
fast you have slow down, 3)  you didn't pre-convict yourself.
However, the judge may decide that 95 (in a 60) is excessive.
Also, you need to be able to get the officer to say that the suburban
was going less than the speed limit - you're not going to win if
that's not the case.

BFE? Some of us East Coasters might not understand the reference...

Sounds like the cop got you dead to rights. As someone else said, bite
the bullet. Otherwise, if you want to fight the ticket, the best
suggestion (IMO) is in three words: get a lawyer. Any other advice you
get here is worth what you paid for it.

I had the same problem:  try googling "bfe egypt".  It's an expletive-
laden acronym meaning "boondocks".

"BFE Egypt" is redundant. The correct usage for your sentence above is
either "BFE" or "BF Egypt."

yabbut googling just "bfe" or "bfe washington" doesn't get you
very close with google, but adding egypt does.

That's why God invented The Urban Dictionary (not encyclopedia -
DICTIONARY):

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=BFE

Contrary to popular belief, Google is not the ONLY source of
information in the world.

Assuming that you knew that the term was pejorative to
begin with, and knew that urbandictionary had it.  Otherwise,
it could very well be something else - Base Flood Elevation
was a very popular hit in google.

And, as I live in WA, grew up in E. WA 1/2 mile from US 97
(granted 150 miles n. of Satus Pass), and didn't know where
BFE was...
