Guns don't get racy exciting names. Why do cars?

laura bush - VEHICULAR HOMICIDE - 19 Jun 2006 18:31 GMT I know there are a few exceptions like the Colt Python or Ruger Redhawk but most guns are just given a numerical designation by the manufacturer such as winchester model 94 or Smith and Wesson 629 or Remington 700 or Ruger P345. No sense in giving a deadly tool a cute name.
But every car gets a name and often something like mustang or thunderbird or cutlass. Americans kill more of their fellow citizens with cars than with guns and it's insane to give cars any attractive names but esp names that enourage murderous driving.

Only to someone as weak minded as you does naming a car after a horse encourage "murderous driving".

Jus because you might go and ram a dozen people at a fruit stand because Ford named a car after an animal doesn't mean the rest of us will.

So what does naming cars after astronomical entities do (Galaxy, Saturn, Comet, Meteor) or other animals (Impala, Sable, Lynx, Cougar, Viper) or places (Tahoe, Capri, Bel Aire) or groups (Navigator, Aviator, Explorer, Prowler) or other things (Expedition, Corvette, Taurus. Freestyle, Caravan, Frontier). Are numbers and/or letters acceptable (Five Hundred, LS 400, LTD, XL, 2002tii, S600, 240Z)? Are made up names OK (Camry, Corvair, Caprice, Maxima, Elantra)?
The idea that the name of a car influences driving styles is a little much. I suppose you might make the case that people who have a predisposition to drive recklessly might be more attracted to cars with racy sounding names, but really, don't you think those people would still prefer fast cars even if they were given dull names? I certainly don't find anything racy in the name Boxster or Carrera - well not until they are on a Porsche (the name of a person).

Sure... personally I like the connotations of Daytona, Bonneville, or Le Mans... (the cars, eh, some of them live up to the promise and some... well...)
I traded my Daytona for a Commander; not sure if I want to see if it has any nautical skills however.

But yeah... when I can imagine that the image of a Box would make you think "SPEEDSPEEDSPEEDKILLKILLKILL" ... because, as your posts indicate, you have a penchant for violence and killing people. The sad thing is that you wish everyone else was like you. You don't care if you kill them yourselves or if someone else does the killing... you just enjoy the blood sport.

For you, everything on the face of the Earth appears to "obviously imply speed and/or violence" because that's all you seem to think about.

Godwin's Law is invoked !!!!!!!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_Law
There is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.

Your interpretation is incorrect BECAUSE if the SUBJECT matter is "Nazis", then Godwin's law serves to prevent debate. Now granted that the idiot you responded to has the debate skills of an stupid sponge, but nonetheless your invocation is incorrect.
Also, there is another phrase in your reference that you need to look at carefully "There is a widely recognized codicil that any such deliberate invocation of Godwin's Law will be unsuccessful."

Graham
SaPeIsMa - 27 Jun 2006 14:32 GMT >> >> Why do you support cars built by nazis? >> > [quoted text clipped - 20 lines] > term Nazi > to refer to something esle. Your own references proves you wrong There was NO comparison It was a claim that a SPECIFIC car was built by nazis. That claim is obviously WRONG You don't need to invoke Godwin's law to disprove that UNLESS you're so incapable as a debater that you need to use a sledgehammer instead of a fly-swatter. You yourself are guilty of the VERY THING that Godwin's law is intended to avoid
You should have kept on reading the part about "debate and controversy". In particular the last paragraph. It describes what you do very well..
>> Now granted that the idiot you responded to has the debate skills of an >> stupid sponge, but nonetheless your invocation is incorrect. > > Sorry. it's quite correct. Godwin's Law would serve no purpose otherwise ! See above
>> Also, there is another phrase in your reference that you need to look at >> carefully [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > understand that > concept ? See above
But since you have trouble getting so far Here's the pertinent part. "The practical consequence of invoking or respecting the validity of so-called "Godwin's law" is that no such comparison is ever allowed, no matter how justified it may be. In any honest and open debate, one party may not preëmptorily reject another's argument without regard for its validity. Thus, the correct way to oppose comparisons to Hitler is to show that they are invalid rather than to reject them out of hand. As a historical figure, Hitler is representative of a whole class of authoritarian or totalitarian behavior. He is neither unique nor the first of his kind with respect to them. This suggests that Hitler cannot be automatically rejected for purposes of comparison where valid.?
Take it to heart the next time you blindly invoke Godwin to try to close debate, when a far simpler approach is available.

A Mustang is a wild horse. Something decidedly different than the domestically raised horse.
And horses, as well, are associated in the public mind with "speed," as in Horse Racing.
When you decide to criticize another's choice of words to make a point, you might think about your choice of words chosen to make your point.
Actually you'd have done better to pick on "Thunderbird."

Americans kill more of their fellow citizens [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Only to someone as weak minded as you does naming a car after a horse > encourage "murderous driving". Murderous, no. Vehicular homicide, definitely. Most "accidents" aren't; they're caused by inattention, which includes:
- driving too fast for conditions - distractions (e.g., changing a tape caused 4 deaths in a rather celebrated case) - inebriation - not following the law -- in California, one is supposed to stop for pedestrians while said pedestrians are in a marked crosswalk, for example.
About the only true accident I can think of would be a hailstone through the windshield or might be a dead tree falling on or in front of one's car while driving, and even in the latter case, one should have about a seconds' warning -- which may barely be enough.
I wouldn't call it murderous but it's extremely sloppy to have 40-50,000 people die on roadways per year; presumably many of them are done in by "marauding trees" getting in front of them after having a few too many, or by falling asleep at the wheel.
http://www.onlinelawyersource.com/personal_injury/auto/statistics.html
is rather sobering, but apparently only 17,400 or so are done in by moving flora, bridge abutments, and such after a night out with a few too many.
But it's a bit of a tradeoff: which is more important, 40-50,000 lives or getting from San Francisco to San Jose quickly? Were we willing, we'd all walk, and even then, someone could drop dead of a heart attack, but at least collisions would be far safer at 3 mph with at most 100 kg of flesh padding, hopefully tastefully covered by appropriate clothing ("oops, pardon me ma'am") than at 60 with 2,000 of metal and plastic, hopefully tastefully covered by an appropriate paint job (ugh, get the body bag).

Unlike, say, heroin, there is no safe level of tobacco use. The drug is legal and very deadly. Users are morons. Alcohol is the second most deadly drug in US society and it causes huge numbers of deaths and the associated misery to those around abusers is incalculable. Alcohol abuse is associated with huge numbers of automobile deaths and violent assaults. By comparison, heroin abuse is an insignificant, statistcal blip.

In fact in most areas of the US one may not even have gun in one's possession while drinking.
Of course we could go to the brilliant logic of the argument you so stupidly make that guns should not be allowed at all unless so tightly regulated they are rendered nearly useless of one of the most important of their obvious uses; self defense.
That will go well with cars should not be allowed either for their most obvious and important use; transport.

Back in the early 1970s, Nissan decided that English names were too tricky and switched to selling autos with numbers and not names. After the switch, their marketing team worked miracles with the brand in this country. Toyota seemed to enjoy more success (in all the Western nations) by calling their cars by the names attributed to women's headwear. Curious.
The Cedric is still sold in Japan. It would seem that the name is appealing to the Japanese. I rode in several Nissan Cedric taxis last time I was there.

Many Japanese wear T-shirts with incomprehensible slogans. I asked about them and was told that the words sounded nice to Japanese ears. They didn't actually have to make any sense. I can only imagine that the name Cedric sounds nice to the Japanese. Perhaps it is a reassuringly English name. For a goodly part of last Century, the Japanese admired everything British. After all, the British trained several of their military officers in the early part of the 20th Century.

The Datsun Fairlady was a worthy competititor to the MGB, only no one really wanted a Japanese car back then. Another Japanese car that was your basic giant killer was the Isuzu Bellet. For a sedan, it could out corner and out brake virtually anything else in it's engine size class.

Back in the day, I used to try to keep up with Alfas and Beemers. I had few problems, 'till those damned corners made an appearance. Bloody Euro cars, stuck to the road like sh.t to a blanket. An STS is not a foreign model. "Most car makers throughout the world..." use alphanumeric designations for their cars. EVERY Mercedes, every BMW... American car companies were always big on names, thus, those companies who sell cars in the US originally mimicked this trend.
Why not try posting something on a topic on which you clearly excel? Something like "Clueless morons who bring up stupid points that ignore facts and reality" would suit you well. No one can do that as well as you do.

> IDIOT. We're talking about american cars not some bangladesh beater. Bangladesh beater? Idiot your own stupid self. Honda/Acura makes some of the best, most dependable cars in the world. Many of them are made in the US and Canada ... Ohio, Ontario, Alabama. Toyota makes cars in Kentucky and California; Nissan makes cars and trucks in Smyrna, Tennessee. As a matter of fact, Nissan is moving its US headquarters to Franklin, Tennessee.
Then there's Saturn (GM) in Spring Hill, TN with its Ion, Sky, and Vue. Real fearsome names there, silly bitch.
Colt was NOT named after a young horse, but after the company's founder, Samuel Colt. Some of its wheelguns (no longer produced IIRC) were named after snakes ... Python, Cobra, Anaconda. Some of Smith and Wessons were named Detective, Chief, Airweight, and even Ladysmith.
The Rugers you named were called Blackhawk and Redhawk because of the color of the hawk in the company crest. The really big .50 caliber wheelgun is called the Alaskan.
The above is NOT all inclusive, just off the top of my head. I speak from the top of my head, not from the a.s as you do.

By the way: this may be along your "drivers-are-murderers" LOS: the reason guns don't get the cool names is this: they are totally useless unless loaded, while drivers are dangerous IF loaded. An unloaded gun can only travel as fast as the guy either carrying it or giving it a mighty heave, which is not near as fast as a car.

> Why don't you address the issue?. Why do cars get racy exciting > names.? Damn Judy... this isn't a tough question - it's so that people will by them. Just as Laundry soap get bright, cheerful, colorful names. For the same reason *any* product is given any name, placed in any packaging, advertised as it is.
A company making a product like Tide will make several versions of the same box with different color schemes, then have a focus group choose the one that ends up on the shelf. They didn't just pull that orange/red/yellow box out of their a.ses... they did a ton of research to figure out the best way to get people to part with their money.
Ford could choose to call a Mustang an A450... but if a focus group indicates that more people will BUY a Mustang than would buy an A450, guess what the name will be.
It's not about how people will drive - a person who drives like a moron will do so whether she is in a Mustang, an A450 or a Sweet Innocence. The name is all about separating people from their money - nothing more.
You could have made a better case for the manner in which cars are driven in auto industry advertising. THAT sets more of an example of "Hey! Drive our car recklessly!" (always cover their a.ses with "Professional driver on a closed course. Do not attempt!".
... but even then you wouldn't have a case - no on turns into a moron because of a car name or an advertisement. Morons are morons no matter what they are subjected to. I highly doubt you'd accuse car companies of causing moron drivers to drive better because they sold them a Diplomat, would you?
