I've just inherited (sort of) a 2002 Taurus. Though it has 63000 miles on
the odo, it pretty much looks like a new car. But 'looks' isn't everything;
at least when it comes to impressing certain passengers (e.g. a date) when
it has a 'background' smell can't seem to find the source of or otherwise
get rid of. Thus I'm looking for a good automotive odour neutralizer and/or
a good scented air freshener to mask the odour (the idea of a true "new car
scent" air freshener intrigues me a little). Any helpful suggestions,
references, experiences, etc. would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken
PS: The obligatory mocking/sarcastic flame responses in lieu of my mention
of "new car scent", although quite expected (based on my reading of related
threads on Google), and while not totally unwelcome I do not consider these
to qualify as "helpful suggestions, experiences, etc." such as I am
requesting.

Not sure of your location, but there are places that do car wash
services (I have used one in Arlington, TX before) that will spray the
interior with a freshener. Other fresheners are available at most auto
parts stores.

I'd try that Febreeze crap first, it works pretty good. If it doesn't
I would check for mold/mildew under the carpets/seats. You should be
able to glance under the seats and the carpeting in the trunk pretty
easily. Check the HVAC ducting, they should be easy to remove/replace.
If you can't find the source/s there, remove the doorsill plate and
look under the carpet. You may find an old, dead mouse or something in
the first processes... let's hope. Mold and mildew are a bitch to
remove from an interior.

Thanks guy for the useful replies.
The odour is not of either the "rotten" or "mold" varieties. For lack of a
more descriptive term, it's just a general kind of "used" smell. As an
after thought here, maybe the car's seats and carpets just need a thorough
washing. In fact I think I'll give this a try first and if it doesn't do
the trick by itself, then I'll go to an auto parts store (as morticide
recommended I go to in order to find...) that "good odour neutralizer/air
freshener".
