As many know, parking in chicago is at your own risk of a ticket because
of predatory techniques by the city's department of revenue. Conflicting
signs, cryptic signs, hidden signs, etc and so forth. I am typically in
the habbit of walking to the end of the block in both directions to make
sure there isn't even a hint of the spot being ticketable.
As I was listening to WLS AM 890 today, the news break had an
interesting story. Because of complaints, alderman have made it illegal
to have a no parking sign higher than 7 feet above the ground or lower
than 4 feet above the ground. What were the complaints that spawned
this? Signs were being placed 20 feet above the ground so that drivers
would not see them and then could be ticketed.

"Why am I writing you a ticket? Can't you read the sign? Keep looking
up... No, higher. Much higher. See the antennas on top of the Sears
Tower? It's up there. Wanna borrow my binoculars?"

Downtown they could post them on Lower Wacker Drive or in the TARP
tunnels (200 feet below street level).

How do you find the time for that? Aren't you late when you arrive due
to all the sloths in your way?

Yeah, right... City employees install parking signs with a bucket
truck... and the citizenry just now noticed... and WLS and the Trib
make no mention of your report via the web.
I'm not saying your report couldn't be true, just that I know you're
usually full of sh.t.

The MUTCD requires urban no parking signs to be at least seven
feet above the ground.

Chicago doesn't care about the MUTCD. If they do, then it's always 7
feet I guess....
