The middle of the back seat appears to be the safest place to sit in a
car. University of Buffalo
researchers studied auto accidents in which a person died between 2000
and 2003 where someone had occupied the rear middle seat. It turns out
that back seat passengers are 59 to 86 percent safer than those in the
front. And the person in the middle of the back seat is 25 percent

Only if the middle seat has a three point harness. Otherwise, it is definitely
not. This is from first hand experience.
