I am planning shortly to take route 81 south from Montreal, Canada and
then 95S to the promised land "Florida". I want to drive about 500
miles a day and have a room reserved at motels at approx 500 mile
intervals.
How can I calculate distances between points on 81S and points between
81S and 95S? I am aware of a site that gives you mileages as the crow
flies, but I want the actual highway mileage.
Are there any websites that can give me this info or should I just add
about 50 miles to the site that calculates the mileages "as the crow
flies"?
Any suggestions would be appreciated?
Thanks.

Ce n'est pas le Canada. C'est la mort. Dans les Etats-Unis, nous
employons des kilom?tres et nous parlons fran?ais.

Either you really HATE driving, or you must not do a lot of long-distance
driving. You're going to average about 70MPH or better on that route,
seeing as you are going to avoid the most congested section of I-95, and
MOST of the route is posted at 65MPH. That means if you start driving
around 8AM, you will be at your next motel before check-in time. That is,
you will be sitting in the lobby waiting for the maid to finish cleaning
your room. Oh, and that assumes you start driving at 8AM. Chances are good
that you will want to hit the road earlier than that. Montreal to (Miami)
Florida can be done in 2 days. The problem is, the only convenient stopping
points are on major drug routes.
The only suggestion I would have is, try to make reservations at *upscale*
motels, located some distance off the highway. And aim for 650 miles a day.
You can do more, but 650 miles will put you in comfortable territory,
time-wise. Assuming you hit the road sometime between 0630 and 0800, you
should get to your next motel sometime shortly after checkin time. Perfect.
Oh, and you can get the 650 mile stopping point through trial and error,
quite easily. I'd probably make my first stop somewhere around Richmond,
VA, and then make my second stop my final destination. -Dave

Dave,
Thanks for your input. Maybe I will stop off at Harrisburg, PA area.

That's absurd. Do you really think that interstate motels are dangerous
because those interstates are 'major drug routes'? Maybe you're kidding.

AFAIK, the sites that provide driving directions all give the distance
in highway miles. MSN.com does as does google.com.
Not sure if this applies to all US interstates but the ones I have been
on the exits are numbered per the mile markers, e.g. an exit 89 will
be 89 miles from the beginning of the interstate.

That has nothing to do with Interstates. It is a state thing. For example,
PA numbers exits on I-81 by mile markers (counting up if travelling North).
But the same exact Interstate road in NY has a totally different numbering
scheme, where you can drive for hundreds of miles and the highest numbered
exit is around number 50 (I think). -Dave

NY is one of a handful with that practice: a sequential system. For
example, exit 1 may be either right on the state line or road junction,
or several miles east or north of the state line, and the next one will
be 2.
Rand McNally has an online driving direction calculator that gives
miles.

Buy a map, or just stop by your local AAA and ask for assistance with
planning your trip.
