"A judge who jailed 11 people because they were late for traffic court
after being directed to the wrong courtroom lost his job Thursday, as the
state Supreme Court ruled he was unfit to remain on the bench."

<...>

"Judge Sloop's indifference to the anxiety, humiliation and hardship
imposed upon these 11 citizens reflects a callous disregard for others
that is among the most egregious examples we have seen of abuse of
judicial authority and lack of proper judicial temperament," the high
court wrote in an unsigned opinion.

The 11 had gone to court on citations ranging from driving with a
suspended license to having an illegal tag. Sloop jailed the misdirected
motorists although two other judges and a bailiff had told him they were
not to blame.

Another judge began paperwork to release them while Sloop was running an
errand, but the motorists were not freed until they had been
strip-searched and spent nine hours behind bars, the high court noted. "

Considering the fact that the judge was terminated from his post, and
how much time the "victims" of his ignorance had to suffer, I think
I'd consider civil lawsuits against him.

I would hope so. One bad judge down, a few thousand to go.

Are there any good ones?

I haven't found any in c(r)ook county IL. Around here it's a tradition
to vote 'no' on retaining every judge.

Must be nice to have the power to vote for 'em.

Sounds like a great tradition.

Problem is, it's not practiced by enough people to be meaningful.

Is there such a thing as a "good," judge (or politician for that
matter)??

Judge Sloop is a good judge - a mighty good judge.  It is a good thing
he was removed from his judgeship.  Now he can be considered for higher
office.

I don't understand.  Were they or were they not late to court?

In Judge sloop's eyes, they were late. Too bad his staff misdirected
his "victims" to the wrong collection, er, court room. Though they
were in the right time, they were in the wrong place. He held the
"victims" accountable for his staff's incompetence. That's why he's
justifiably being removed from the bench, and hopefully due to his
incompetence he'll have to take endure a significant loss of pay.

The damnedest deal about this is a lot of judges are not even elected.
Damned if ANYONE dare to question a judge's decision (sure, there's an
appeals process, but no higher than USSC).  The only thing that
Congress can do without a SC jackslap risk is spend our money.  And we
wonder why the ragheads consider us a target.

Land of the free...thing of the past.

Agreed. I would rather deal with the potential of corruption from an
elected judge than to deal with the arrogance and ignorance of a judge
that can't be voted out.

Nope. They were misinformed by officers of the court.

Not to mention that the judge himself admits he was wrong.  OF course,
that doesn't stop the inevitable a.s from standing up and defend his
actions.

judge's staff and were late.

Better yet, he should be relegated to taking a job down at the local car
wash and having to clean the vehicles of the very people he screwed.

Yep, there's always someone willing to lick Authority's boots... even
when Authority itself can't stomach the taste.
