"The EPA's new rules, first proposed in January, are designed to make fuel
economy estimates more accurate. The old mileage tests were last updated in
1985, and had been the source of growing complaints of over-optimistic
projections for fuel efficiency."

That's funny.  I've never driven a vehicle that didn't exceed the EPA
estimates on the window sticker.  Yes, I've driven many types of vehicles
from sedans to minivans to small pickups to (gasp) SUVs.  Not always by
choice, btw.  But anyway, I've always achieved better numbers than the
window sticker says I should.  I'm not exactly a conservative driver,
either.

I've always thought the EPA estimates were pessimistic, not optimistic.

I'll bet the EPA numbers under the 1985 rules would be a lot more accurate
if people in the U.S. just knew how to drive.  For example, remote car
starters are very popular, but a DRIVER knows that idling an engine for more
than 30 seconds is just wasting fuel.  And I constantly see a husband or
wife waiting in the car (with the engine running) while spouse runs into a
store to buy something.  And all those idiots that can't hold a constant
speed on the highway?  (probably 50% or more of drivers in the U.S.)  They
are just MURDERING their highway MPG figures with constant acceleration.  I
could go on and on, but I think I've made my point.  There is nothing wrong
with the 1985 EPA rules, it is the drivers that need revision.  -Dave

And take care of their cars.  Many people don't seem to realize that
they need to check the air pressure in their tires every so often,
for example.  (And if they aren't doing that, they probably aren't
checking other things like the oil, check engine light, etc.)

Good point.  As a minimum, I check the tires on all my vehicles every other
week.  I'm betting that's better than at least 99% of drivers.  -Dave

If they're more accurate, that's fine with me.  Even with well
maintained vehicles, I've never gotten the mileage advertised on the
sticker.
