Police: Teen Driver Attempted Suicide By Crashing Into Mall
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Altamonte Springs police say a 19-year-old
driver was trying to kill himself when he drove his car through the
Altamonte Mall. The driver not only busted a perfume stand and broke a
lot of glass, he ended up landing near the food court of the mall, on
the east Central Parkway entrance to the mall.
The mall opened for business Tuesday morning after the car smashed
through the mall's front doors the night before.
According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, 19-year-old Adam
Soloman Kahin, of Longwood, intentionally drove his red Mitsubishi
into the northwest side of the mall in an attempt to commit suicide.
Police said Kahin accelerated down the corridor and crashed through
the Ero's Perfume stand and into the escalator, dropping to the lower
level of the mall. Kahin had to be extricated from the vehicle, police
said, by the Seminole County Fire Department and was transported to
Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
"I feared for my life. It was 10:30. The car comes through the mall
and lands on the first floor," said eyewitness Bill Walls.
Isaac Rivera, who works at T-Mobile in the mall, couldn't believe what
had just occurred. After the car crashed through the front doors on
the second floor, it traveled down the corridor, hit the perfume
kiosk, hit the escalator and then the car plummeted to the first
floor.
"I heard this screeching, scratching and a crashing car coming down
middle of the mall," said Rivera, who was getting a cup of coffee in
the food court.
Rivera managed to roll some video on his cell phone right after the
accident.
"You can see the kiosk. It hit the escalator and landed in front of
Radio Shack. Everyone was asking if he's okay," Rivera explained. "I
felt like I was in a movie, surreal, unreal," Rivera added.
According to police, Kahin made statements that he wanted to commit
suicide. He was Baker-acted and will be held for 72 hours for a
psychiatric evaluation.
Police said Kahin will also be charged with criminal mischief and
culpable negligence, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
There were no other injuries and approximately $100,000 damage to the
mall and $5,000 to Ero's Perfume.

"Baker-acted"? Does that means he's sentenced to become a
televangelist who screws with trailer trash?

I dunno, man. This whole thing sounds more like an artistic statement
than a cry for help. In fact, I'd probably buy this guy a beer just to
get his insurance photos ...

No ya didn't. It was never not cool.

*Sigh*. If you want to commit suicide by car, you need to drive into
something large and solid. A stone or concrete bridge abutment is of
course classic, but an good oak tree can do as well. A brick wall works
reliably too, but only if it's a structural brick wall or brick over
cinder block and not just a facade on some weaker material. Malls and
other steel-frame buildings, frame houses, tents, and carboard boxes
are right out.

I don't know - he drove into the mall on the second floor, and ended
up upside-down on the first floor after driving down the escalator.
Maybe if he'd simply driven through the railing and fallen straight
down he would have succeeded?
I'll give him this: he's an inventive little f.cker. :)

If you listen carefully, you can hear Carl's wife scream just prior to the impact.

Certainly he'd have had a better chance, but a 20-foot or so fall in a
car isn't necessarily fatal either. He's only going to be doing
32mph when he hits, if my 20-foot figure is right.

I have to put my foot down on this acronym. An acronym is supposed to
roll off the tongue and make the full phrase EASIER to remember since
everybody knows the acronym. YABDQE is just nonsense.

In miltary style, you just make the nonsense acronym into something
else... how about: YAB-DUKE?
It's like what became HUMVEE, orginally HMMWV, High Mobility
Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle.

Or YAB-DOOKIE?

To be honest, I wasn't even thinking about pronunciation when I came
up with that acronym. I'll try to do better next time. :)

You know, this sounded too familiar.
Man charged in playground rampage

Some guy tries to off himself by crashing through a playground.
Then, there are the successful ones.

Geez, why can't these drama queens do it right and just jump off a
bridge? I can name three nice tall ones within 250 miles of this mall.
