In the last 6 months while the price of crude and gas have tumbled, a quart of havoline or valvoline at Walmart has risen from $1.50 to $2.20.!!!! Apparently the price rise has been going on since mid 2004. I'd attribute most of it to direct and indirect effects of rising crude prices: feedstocks, plastic bottles, and the transportation of plastic bottles have all gone up. An additional factor to the tune of a couple dimes in the same timeframe may have been reformulation to the GF-4 standard. It isn't a huge factor in the cost of owning and operating a car, but I do kinda miss the days when the alert lurker could get motor oil for somewhere between 49 cents a quart and free after rebate as a loss leader to get you in the store. I doubt the stores are making much money off motor oil anyway, especially if you further include the costs of taking in used motor oil (as some places that sell it are required to do) and the little bites here and there all along the supply chain of dealing with even a vaguely hazardous chemical.
