Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS - 19 Dec 2006 04:16 GMT
In the last 6 months while the price of crude and gas have tumbled, a
quart of havoline or valvoline at Walmart has risen from $1.50  to
$2.20.!!!!

You're delusional. Automotive oil around here is the same price that it
has been for years. Why don't you ask the socialist government in that
CO shithole you live in if they jacked up the taxes on it to pay for
your meds.

OBTW, where's my $3.75 gas, you goob?

Sure, why not? I'm going on the theory that this weed killer I use on
the lawn goes by: stimulate the growth of the weeds so much that the
weeds choke themselves out. Kinda hoping that SFB does the same thing
and just plain dies.  :)

Makes sense, now that you mention it that way.

However, the only "growth" I see in SADDAMs life is in the OD of it's
bung-hole and corresponding increase in the size of it's spooge
collection due to it's frequent visits to the bath-houses.

That's only $2.80 a gallon increase.
Why do you think the oil companies are making such humongous profits and
Republicans protect the oil industries exhorbitant profiteering?

Maybe if your jalopy didn't burn a quart of oil per tank of gas you
wouldn't care so much.

Exactly what I was thinking then I held off from responding.  Maybe the
motor oil price is starting to cut in to the sandpaper-retread budget.

Don't your neighbors get pissed about you pouring all that black gunk

care?

Hell, they probablly use it to pave their driveways (that assumes,
ofcourse, that they *have* something to park there). :)

Ad absurdum per aspera - 19 Dec 2006 18:46 GMT
It isn't just you, your favorite brands, or where you shop.  Apparently
the price rise has been going on since mid 2004.  I'd attribute most of
it to direct and indirect  effects of rising crude prices: feedstocks,
plastic bottles, and the transportation of plastic bottles have all
gone up.  An additional factor to the tune of a couple dimes in the
same timeframe may have been reformulation to the GF-4 standard.

It isn't a huge factor in the cost of owning and operating a car, but I
do kinda miss the days when the alert lurker could get motor oil for
somewhere between 49 cents a quart and free after rebate as a loss
leader to get you in the store.

I doubt the stores are making much money off motor oil anyway,
especially if you further include the costs of taking in used motor oil
(as some places that sell it are required to do) and the little bites
here and there all along the supply chain of  dealing with even a
vaguely  hazardous chemical.   It's still a low value item that takes
up lots of shelf space and has to be carried in a lot of types and
viscosity ranges, times all the brands that any customer's dad ever
assured him were the best.

The answer is simple. The price is set by the market. If enough people
refused to pay $2.20, it would go down. Same with any product. If the
price is too high, use less of it.
