Sloth Kills Again?

Scott en Aztlán - 21 Dec 2006 03:23 GMT Here we have a probable case of Sloth Kills.
Houghton is a semi-rural, two-lane road with few passing zones and far too much traffic. It's rare NOT to get stuck behind some Sloth while driving on that road; it's happened to me many, many times.
Here's what I think happened: the guy in the purple Civic was stuck behind a Sloth (or, more likely, multiple Sloths), attempted to pass, and misjudged, striking the victim's car head on.
Of course, the statistics will show this collision as "speed-related" or "road rage" or "aggressive driving" or something along those lines. Meanwhile, the TRUE cause of the collision - the Mr. Magoo retiree who was driving 15 MPH below the speed limit - just kept right on driving and was long gone by the time the cops arrived.
Of course, this is all just a theory. We'll never know if this is what actually happened, since the police won't collect the proper data to make such a determination.

Car weaving down Houghton kills motorist By Alexis Huicochea ARIZONA DAILY STAR Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.20.2006
A 45-year-old Tucson woman died Tuesday afternoon on the Southeast Side when the driver of a car crossed the center line and hit her vehicle head-on, police said. The woman, whose name will not be released until her family has been notified, was northbound on South Houghton Road near East Drexel Road at 4:42 p.m. when a purple Honda Civic struck her Ford Tempo, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. Witnesses told police the Civic was weaving in the road and being driven erratically before the collision, Robinson said. Both drivers were trapped in their cars and had to be removed by the Tucson Fire Department, he said. The woman was wearing a seat belt but police could not determine if the 43-year-old man driving the other car was. There were no passengers. A helicopter was called to take the woman to a hospital because her injuries were so severe, but she died before it arrived.

Nor did I read anything about a Mr. Magoo in the clipping either. Was Magoo the 43-year-old man driving the Civic? I can understand not releasing the name of the dead woman until her next-of-kin are notified, but the man seemed to survive the crash. Why is his name being withheld?

Getting stuck behind a sloth sucks, but only a dipshit idiot would pass with not enough visibility. The sloth didn't cause the crash, but did contribute to it.

>Getting stuck behind a sloth sucks, but only a dipshit idiot would pass >with not enough visibility. I absolutely agree. Nobody is saying what the purple Civic driver did wasn't incredibly stupid, but THAT'S HUMAN NATURE. When one is trapped by a Sloth, the wide open road ahead of the Sloth practically BEGS one to find some way - any way - to escape the trap. YES, angry people sometimes make poor judgement calls. The point is, if there hadn't been a Sloth blocking the road to cause the anger, the collision in the story would never have occured.
In Message-ID: <HY5hh.14188$GB1.1348@tornado.texas.rr.com>, Jaybird tells us about a law in Texas that basically says if you use "abusive, indecent, profane, or vulgar" language in public, that tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace and YOU can be arrested for disorderly conduct. One so charged might try an argument similar to yours, e.g. "yeah, it sucks that I called this guy an ugly sack of sh.t, and said his girlfriend was a two-bit whore, but that was no reason for him to punch me in the nose." The law rightfully recognizes that the instigators are not entirely blameless in such incidents.
Clearly, a Sloth who pisses people off by driving too slowly is every bit as guilty of disturbing the peace as the guy who utters obscenities. In crashes like these, the Sloth shares in the blame, and should be sanctioned for the carnage they help to cause. A ticket for disturbing the peace would be a good step in the right direction.

An intentional attempt to incite is irrelevant to someone driving down the road guilty of only being unconcerned with your opinion of their velocity.
> Clearly, a Sloth who pisses people off by driving too slowly is every > bit as guilty of disturbing the peace as the guy who utters > obscenities. Spurious conclusion. If a driver can piss people off by driving too slowly, a driver can piss people off by driving too fast. How might a driver determine which velocity might incite anger in which driver?
Everybody over the age of 6 is responsible for controlling their own emotions. They don't tolerate such logic in kindergarten. They call it "Plays well with others"... and you can flunk.
Nobody makes you angry, you choose to become angry. you can choose to not become angry, and you can choose to not act on your emotions. Every decent parent who has had a 3 year old has expected the child to exert more self-control that you seem to think is required to drive.
> In crashes like these, the Sloth shares in the blame, and > should be sanctioned for the carnage they help to cause. A ticket for > disturbing the peace would be a good step in the right direction. Disturbing the peace? Because no law prohibits driving within the speed limits, or at a velocity which another driver might disagree?
Who stands in judgment of your velocity?
May they determine it not of their liking, crash in your vicinity, and you be found partially responsible?
I'm beginning to think you believe the ROW is dependent on velocity.

If the converse were true you and I would have a different angle here. This Scott genius won't admit to the actual ratio. There's also the issue of having a high-performance car and forgetting what mere mortals are driving. People make a similar mistake when they cut off semi trucks.

Aztlán is the name that certain radical Mexicans have given to the area of land that was lost to the US durig the Mexican-American War of 1848, as well as the territory comprising the subsequent Gadsden Purchase. Post a video of all these "sloths" and it will probably reveal cautious drivers that you're eager to tailgate and pass. But having said that, I find that a good 70% of people drive too fast a lot, especially in snow and fog. The ratio of speediots to sloths seems to be at least 5:1 overall.
It's a fact that *overly* slow driving can be dangerous, but evidence shows speeding to be a far greater evil. That's another truth your ego can't cope with. A fair and balanced conversation is impossible with zealots, and moderate driving (as I do) is not zealotry. If someone started posting in r.a.d. about the safety benefits of driving below the limit I'd call them an idiot too. There just isn't nearly the level of denial about that vs. speeding.
Safe driving is about planning ahead and not being in a real or contrived hurry all the time. Why anyone would go to such lengths to deny basic physics is a mystery to me.
The idea that I'm a "sloth" is a pure fabrication. I never actively impede traffic and do quite well getting from A to B on time. You just can't handle anything subtle about speeding. They're either with you (brothers with lead feet) or against you (sloths). If you ever join the middle ground you'll actually become the safe driver you insist you are. I can forgive you for being young, maybe, but not an ignorant egomaniac. It's unclear what's motivating your speed obsession.
