Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS - 04 Jan 2007 16:51 GMT
99% of the people in america don't break any laws except when they get
on the roads.  Then  nearly all of them turn into criminals who by
their speeding and drunk driving and red light running and other
assorted crimes kill 42,000 americans a year and injure millions and
cost hundreds of billions of $. !!!   Criminal driving is by far  the
commonest and deadliest and costliest crime in america and that's what
we should focus on.

Sorry, but it just won't work.  There's too much of an attitude problem
among drivers.  Drivers see driving as a right rather than a privilege, and
anything that interferes with that "right" is viewed as Nazi or Big Brother
in nature.  Just look at the permanent adolescents in this group who can't
even bring themselves to understand the concept of policemen.

Until the attitude changes, nothing else will.

It is Big Brother.  You'd have to be pretty dumb to not realize that.
If you have reasonable laws and treat drivers as adults and with
respect, then many of the problems on the road would go away.  Next
thing to do is to have better driver education and,  and just as
importantly, driver training.  Then you would see a really huge drop in
problems on the road.  Until then we will continue the stupid game of
cops and robbers that goes on the road know.  Cops treat everyone like
a criminal and enforce stupid laws that annoy the citizens.  So they
don't get the respect they think they deserve.

I find the cell phone drivers are worse than the drunk drivers.  Nearby
school has the moms in their SUV's always blowing through the signal every
day.

We had the local news cover the increasing number of kids who "text message"
while driving.  All admitted to looking up and nearly causing - or have
caused - an accident.

We don't multi-task as well as we think we do.

It's just insane that such activities are legal.  Cell phones should be
banned from cars as should radios and CDs.

Here is a rare occasion of a bit of agreement...I agree with the topic
of the OP, but the cameras should be in the CARS for recording the
stupid activities of the drivers (including cops).  The cops have used
this method for quite a while, as has Scott for our entertainment.

Going a bit further: ANYTHING can be a distraction to a driver,
including other drivers, road signs and cops.  Perhaps we should play
it safe and ban driving altogether.  Yeah, that'll fly like a lead
balloon.

A phrase similar to that gave the band Led Zeppelin its name.

Oh would you shut up with moronic "taking things to extremes" bullshit

stop comparing them to cell phones!!

That's probably true, and I am always hearing people always saying that
no one should be allowed to use a cell phone while driving a car. But
just with the SHEER NUMBER of people I see talking on cell phones and
driving (often poorly), I think there are definitely some people out
there claiming that cell phones while driving should be outlawed but
they themselves still use them.

How about cars having a sensor that detects cellphone transmissions inside the
cabin of a car and turns off the ignition ?

It would work only if programmed to also apply the brakes and guide the
car to the shoulder.  Also it should only enable the ignition after the
transmission ends.

Not nearly serious enough.  I propose that whenever a sensor reads a
cellphone transmission coming from the driver seat, the driver's
compartment should be filled up with shaving cream.  :-)

Screw that expensive tech solution. What we need is a law that says if
are invovled in a fatal crash and it's determined you were on a cell
phone at the time, then it's automatic 50 years in the can. And that
should apply even if you did NOT cause the crash, since if you had been
off the phone you prolly would have avoided the crash. Stop coddling
these deadly cell phone drivers.

Your idea makes about as much sense as giving someone like you a drivers

Won't see anything. I'm a slow safe driver. Anyway, the idea is not to
put them in cars but to have them along the roads to catch the deadly

If you have police actually patrolling the roads, instead of hiding in
the bushes, you would not need to
do this.  Not only that but cops patrolling the roads act as a
deterrent.

Neither way will work until it's combined with stiff penalties like
jail time and license suspensions. Let's stop coddling these killers

Unfortunately, the numbers don't quite add up:

http://www.iihs.org/news/2006/iihs_news_081006.pdf

It appears the death rate has gone _down_ despite the ever increasing
usage of cell phones during the same time period.

Note how the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is quick to claim
that drivers have not improved. Could there be a financial reason for
this??

I tend to be more interested in the number of crashes as opposed to
fatalities.  (Interestingly, according to the graph on page 32 of this
report, if you're going to crash, the more drunk you are the less
likely you'll die... and some alcohol is better than no alcohol. Drunk
drivers seem to be becoming more proficient at killing the dead-sober.)
http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-30/NCSA/TSFAnn/TSF2005.pdf

And it seems crashes are down overall in 2005, following an undeniable
trend.  Which is entirely contradictory to my expectations, and
observations.

When I commuted to downtown Cincy in the 1980s, there was rarely a rush
hour crash on I-71, a few per week, tops, and sometimes none.  Today it
seems there are multiple crashes on -every- interstate and major
highway in the area.  You can check out the Greater Cincinnati traffic
at http://www.artimis.org/

I don't know what to make of it...
