Truck drivers and cell phones

I recently was on a tour bus and was surprised to noticed the number
of truck drivers who yak on their cell phones. Most did NOT have a
hands free device. How do they change gears with one hand? I never
noticed truck drivers talking on the cell, since from way down low in
a car one can not see what they are doing. But from the bus I could
clearly see 50% of all truck drivers were talking on the cell phone.
Quite scary considering the deadly consequences of a massive accident
if one plows into stopped traffic!

Celll phones should be banned for all drivers but esp for truckers and
their 80,000 pound rigs. Same with CB radios. Just crazy how this
stupid country tolerates such deadly behaviour.

I think we should promote deadly behavior.  Our highways suffer from
serious congestion.  The more we can do to relieve this congestion, the
better.

And car passengers should be bound and gagged.

And stuffed in the trunk, but I digress...:)

Banning all sorts of communication devices in automobiles would be
effective, only if the ban disallows exemptions for police radios.
Cops need to set good examples.  No intended disrespect for the
jaybird.

Sorry, that's now illegal (at least in California). :)

Actually, to bind, gag and stuff Aunt Judy into a trunk would make our
roads infinitely safer. To then drop that trunk over the Marianas Trench
would make the roads even safer still.

They usually drive with their elbows resting on the steering wheel
while they are talking.  Moving one arm over to the shifter and back is
a pretty uneventful affair.

Truckers don't usually make enough money to waste it on frivolous items
like hands-free devices.  They need to save their money so they can buy
Christmas toys for the little ones.

Honestly, I hope the truckers kill as many people as possible.  I like
to drive and drive fast. Currently, there are too many idiots on the
highway that try to impede my progress.

Why don't you argue that the faster one drives the less time spent driving and available to be involved in an accident?

You aren't very nice.  I was kinda thinking that maybe I needed therapy

The only one who needs therapy is SADDAM. I reccommmend a course of
Sodium thiopental followed by pancuronium bromide followed by potassuim
chloride. Of course, a good strong rope and a tall tree will do just as
well...

If you hold the phone with your left hand and rest the elbow on the
steering wheel it's no problem shifting with you right hand. FYI, the
risk is about the same whether you're using handsfree or not.

I'd rather share the highway with ten truckers on cell phones than one
overstressed overestrogened soccer mom on the cell.

Yep, the truckdrivers would have enough sense to drop the phone if he
(or she) needed to.

If you think soccer moms are overstressed, what do you think Truckers
are? They work ridiculous hours for low pay, forging their logs so
they can get in a few miles per day. These guys piss in empty milk
jugs because they don't have time to stop and use a restroom. They
spend days at a stretch inside a rolling sweatshop, battling nightmare
traffic for hours every day, but you think a SOCCER MOM is more
stressed out? You're out of your mind!

>Yep, the truckdrivers would have enough sense to drop the phone if he

Yeah, right.

A few years back, a Trucker crashed his rig and stopped traffic for
hours. Yeah, he dropped his cell phone, but then HE REACHED DOWN TO
PICK IT UP.

The original article is long gone from the Arizona Daily Star web
site, but here's the original thread discussing it:

Yeah.  Don't remember his nym but he was posting on here for awhile.

As for the subject of shifting without hands on steerign wheels.  Back
when, I drove 2 different 2 and 2 1/2 ton trucks with 2 speed
mechanical shift rear ends.  Sift for the rear was a lever to the left
of the wheel, standard shift on the right.  Didn't seem to be a problem
split shifting.  38 cornbinder (may have been a 1 1/2 ton) and a 47
KB5.

By taking it off the steering wheel, of course!
