Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS - 09 Jan 2007 19:07 GMT
They're going after the second hand smoke angle but the real problem
with smoking drivers is the same as the   problem with drivers on cell
phones or playing with the radio or eating food.  Holding a burning
stick in your hand while driving increases your chances of losing
control and killing some innocent person.

Bangor, Maine, makes it illegal to smoke in cars with children present

    BANGOR, Maine, Jan. 9, 2007
(AP) The Bangor City Council approved a measure Monday that prohibits
people from smoking in vehicles when children are present.

When the law goes into effect next week, Bangor will become the first
municipality in Maine to have such a law. Similar statewide measures
have been adopted in Arkansas and Louisiana and are under consideration
in several other states.

People who smoke with children present in the confined space of a car
or truck might as well be deliberately trying to kill those children,
said City Councilor Patricia Blanchette, who is a smoker.

"Let's step up to the plate and lead; our children are worth the
fight," she said.

The ordinance, which was approved by a 6-3 vote, applies to any motor
vehicles on any public roads within the city. Violators face fines of
up to $50.

Then only risk I have of losing control of my car is because I have to
share the road with the likes of you and yours with your bald "tars," no
emergency brakes and other inoperative safety equipment.

I can see the real problem.  Bangor's city government has way too
much money to waste.  If it can have its police hassle people just for
smoking Marlboros in their cars, either Bangor lacks serious crime
worth the number of officers it has - or it neglects serious crime.

It's government treating the population as children as if it were an grade
school class room. This is 'when children are present' so obviously it was
pushed through under the 'it's for the children' excuse.

Of course the real annoyance from smokers in cars is the fling of still lit
butts and embers outside their vehicle at anyone behind them. Sometimes I
wish I had a pack of sigs in my car so I could light one, pass the arsehole
who just threw one at my car, and throw one back at his.

I have to agree with you here.  I'm so sick and tired of people
flicking that garbage out of the window it's not even funny.

It's one thing to hold the burning stick, but God forbid that the
smoking driver DROP that stick on his lap or onto the floor carpet!
That would be much worse.  Or if the smoking driver would throw the
smoldering cigarette butt out the window and set your sandpaper tire
treadwork afire....

I still can't believe the United States allows cigarett... I mean,
cancer sticks, to be sold.

Then you don't know america. Big Tobacco pays millions of $ every year
to our congressmen  to let the cancer sticks be sold and that's that.

The first settlement in America, Jamestown, thrived on tobacco.  They grew
it because people wanted it.  People bought it because they wanted it.  More
people came and grew more tobacco.  Then came the Pilgrims...     Sherman.

It's the whole liberal nanny-state trying to take over.  And don't let
Republicans who favor smoking legislation make you think this is not
liberalism at its heart.

I can light a cigarette in a 70 mph wind without even thinking about it
and the only time I drop a cigarette is when I'm 3 sheets to the wind -
and I NEVER drive when I'm more than 1 sheet to the wind.

I also NEVER EVER litter ANYTHING.

If you think smoking while driving is such a distraction, then your next
"war" will be against stereos in cars since it's more difficult to push
a preset on your radio than it is to light and smoke a cigarette.

As for smoking around children, I don't do it at all and will go out of
my way to avoid letting a child even catch a whiff of my cancer-stick,
but if anyone thinks it's such a big deal, perhaps I have a good case
against all the adults who smoked around me when I was a kid including
drivers of cars I was an involuntary passenger in.

And of course, the next step is to ban smoking in people's homes even if
they do NOT have small children because god forbid you hire a plumber to
come fix your toilet and he (or she) is exposed to lingering second hand
smoke present in your home.  I say if the plumber doesn't like it, he
can refuse to enter your home and refuse to collect your money.

I choose to smoke.  I know it's "BAD, M'KAY".  I don't give a sh.t.  We
all gotta die of something.

I am against radios and CDs and cell phones in cars.  Just insane the
way nuts like you think driving a 4000 pound vehicle at 60 mph on
PUBLIC roads should be fun !!!  Get help please, you dangerous
psychopath.

Your alternate means of getting emergency information to/from drivers
is...?

I'd bet on arrest as the main means suggested.

Get outa here you idiot. You're like the nuts who say drunk driving
should be legal cause "Hey - what if my kid gets sick some time  when
i'm drunk and i have to drive her to the hospital ."

I admit that sometimes radios in cars are useful.  But in general they
do 100 times more harm than good. THINK

Where does the 100 times figure come from?  Care to share your
research?

How would you compare the percentage of drunk drivers claiming to need
to drive a sick child to the hospital to the number of motorists in
emergency situations requiring a telephone and/or radio?

For that matter -- and shockingly, this may actually be something
*useful* in this thread -- what's the data on lives saved by cell
phones versus lives lost because of using them?  Be sure to cite your
sources, now.

Oh,as if YOU are the typical smoker. You aren't.(if what you claim is true)
More accurately, you are a rare exception.(if what you claim is true)

You probably think you can drive and talk on a cellphone with no loss of
driving attention,too. You can't.

Pretty timid, if you ask me.

I'm sure that the precious kiddies spend more time with their smoking
parents at home than they do in cars.

The State needs to take the kids from their parents at birth so that
they can be raised as Good Citizens.

What's timid about this plan is the penalty - $50. That won't do any
good.  Charge mummy with felony child endangerment and fine her $2,000
and put her on proabtion for 3 years might do some good. Stop coddling
these criminal parents.
