My solution to dangerous drivers

Why can't cars be equiped with wireless devices that simply let you
point at any obnoxious car . The device then transmits the information
to a central database that generates reports based on how many times a
car has been 'flagged' by users. This is similar to the way 99% of
online communities work, i.e users police it themselves.

So many cars in big cities already have i-pass to get through toll
gates, so I think it just a matter of time before every car is equiped
with these devices that can communicate with each other. This community
policing would be a lot cheaper than the police and a lot more
effective, your thoughts?

It's a great idea, occurred to me decades ago, but the only faults are;
nobody gives a sh.t, today any moron would use it as an act of revenge
for anyone who happened to want to drive slower than they, or for
other, non-driving offenses, and the resources to weed out those idjits
from legitimate complainants do not exist.  Plus, it's one word against
another in each case, few will complain about the same offense since...
they're LATE!

We have wars to wage and crumbling infrastructure to ignore, we're far
too busy pissing money away to think of constructive uses.

wow. You obviously have no idea what the prior poster was writing.

Like that's a surprise.

Since such misuse would probably hit everyone, I think that it
could still work regardless.  Not every single report would
generate a rebuke, one would look for developing patterns.  So,
if you get reported for left lane blocking once, no problem --
if such reports arrive more frequently than on average, chances
are you're an LLB.  Same for other offences, of course.

Yours,
  Erik.

This has been proposed before, but with cheaper (lower-tech) devices
such as suction cup darts and paintball guns to mark the shitty
drivers' vehicles. Cops would simply pull over and impound any vehicle
with three or more darts/paintball splats on it (and revoke the
driver's license).

So, your answer is a tattle-tale police state system like that which was
used in places like east germany and other famous police states to root out
of political opinion that differed from the governments. And of course,
people won't find ways to abuse this system... like the unpopular kid in HS
suddenly has 300 hits against him or something like that.... or some state
offical tweaking it to make trouble for a politically active citizen. And
before someone says the later can't happen, vehicle regulation harrassment
has been reported on a number of times in chicago when some citizen makes
trouble for someone in political office

I'd rather deal with piss poor drivers than live in a police state.

Scenrio: My car is seen by my ex-girlfriend, ex-boss, my worst enemy,
someone who doesn't like the color of my skin, my ethnicity, my favorite
football team etc... and suddenly I get "flagged," whether or not I was
doing something at the time.

Since we're fantasizing about pie-in-the-sky technology, why not make
the device record the violation? The video, telemetry, and other
evidence would be reviewed and false accusations would be fairly easy
to weed out.

Think of it as a sort of wireless MFFYCam: it captures video of shitty
driving, packages up the data, and transmits it to police
headquarters. The footage would be reviewed by a human being, just as
the video footage from red light cameras is reviewed, before any
further action is taken.

Does that address your concern?

You mean those shared revenue devices where the 'reviewers' have sent out
speeding tickets for half the speed of sound, plates and cars that did
not match, etc and so forth?

What a stupid idea and besides we already know the solution to
dangerous drivers and that's license suspensions and prison time.

For some odd reason you omitted vehicle confiscation from your usual
recommendations.  Thought the reminder would come in handy.
