On Thursday, Dec. 21st at 8:00PM my wife was walking one of our two
Golden Retrievers on a DEAD END STREEET. As she went to cross at the
crosswalk with Smokey on his 6 foot leash, a Dodge Charger R/T (I
believe that's 350 hp) came barreling down the road toward the dead
end...where a lot of kids in fast cars come to do "donuts" The 16 year
old driver blew past the stop sign at around 80mph. He not only did
NOT brake...but while my wife was stopped dead in her tracks trying to
figure out what this clown was doing...HE TURNED THE WHEEL RIGHT
TOWARDS HER. She took a half a step backwards and the car slammed into
Smokey head on killing him instantly and throwing his 75 pound body 50
yards away. The car then proceeded to hit a palm tree and flip over
three times in the dead end...landing in a neighbors yard past the
dead end in another sub division. My wife LITTERARLY came within
inches of getting killed.
The kids (3 I believe) were not only fine.....but MANY witnesses say
they were laughing about the incident. The driver was charged with
"reckless driving" and went home to spend a happy Christmas with his
family.
His parents were called. When they arrived at the scene, with my wife
hysterical crying over the loss of one of our "kids" (we don't have
human kids..we have always had Golden Retrievers).......The parents
(who drove up in a brand new Jaguar) said "my kid couldn't have done
that, he's a good kid. We are good parents."
Now we are left to deal with the grief, because a 16 year old, who
(IMHO) should not be driving at all, was showing off for his
girlfriend and another guy in the car. Or worse yet....AIMING for my
dog. (you all know)...."5 points for the dog...ha ha ha "
Parents........your kids don't drive the same for you as they do when
egged on by piers.
I hope this will save just one life...human or beloved pet.

Damn...that's heinous! I read the responses in the link. You sure it
wasn't AJ behind the wheel?
Recommendations to the "Mike" guy:
1. Get the kid's license suspended for 90 days. Also those of his
friends.
2. Confiscate the car.
3. Bring up charges of attempted murder (escaped victim being the
wife).
4. Charge the "can't be OUR kid" parents as accomplices. Yank THEIR
licenses and vehicles as well. P-poor kids usually are offspring of
P-poor parents.
5. If the kid just gets a swat on the pee-pee for reckless driving
over the incident, SUE THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT!
Bet Aunt Judy has other recommendations.

This little upper-middle class snot aimed for this woman and her dog. In
my book, that's vehicular assult and/or attempted murder. Where the hell
is the prosecutor in the town where this happened.
I since the law obviously doesn't want to do anything I sincerely hope
that there is someone who will exact a little street justice on those
punk kids - preferablly involving a tall tree and a short rope.
May the dog Rest in Peace.

This will now be used in an attempt to justify 55mph interstate speed
limits and an argument that 80mph on an interstate is reckless.

Of course they were, mommy and daddy will buy the kid a new car.

Of course that's all. And he will probably be let off in court when mommy
and daddy get him a lawyer.
I always find it amazing that gross incompetence and recklessness
resulting in a death is punished so lightly compared to just driving the
speed of traffic and harming no one.

What does he care, mommy and daddy will pay for the body shop to fix his
car, that is for just hitting the dog. For totalling it, he'll get a new
one. After all he'll say it was 'sudden acceleration' or some other BS.

Pass a law that stops anyone under say 25 operating such cars.

Or require testing and licensing for such vehicles that will ensure that
only people who can handle the cars can drive them. Better yet, expand
this testing to the entire population, not just those who want to own
high powered cars. That would probablly have kept a DL out of the hands
of these punks and that dog would be alive today.

Since when is there a "right," to drive or own a vehicle?

How about a law preventing relatives from buying such cars for anyone
under 21? If a kid is smart enough to earn enough money to buy a brand
new Dodge Charger R/T *all by himself*, he might just be mature enough
to handle the responsibility. And, if he can't, and he wraps it around
a pole, he sure as hell won't be able to afford a replacement right
away. :)

I agree with that argument, Scott. My best guess is that if a kid is
willing to bust his can investing in a car of his choice, without
parental bailout capability, he's less likely to act like an a.s and
treat the car like a POS. That was my case 27 years ago in a '71 Dart.

Mine also (a 1967 GTO). It had the capability to do the donuts, but I
had to buy the tires, the gas, etc. So there wasn't any monkey business
with that car (well perhaps a few drag races on the highway, but that
was about it. :-)

Yea, you got that right. Life has become cheap, anymore. What kills a
person and changes their family's life forever (and for the worse), is
just chump change to the person who did it.
If this one is true, the guy and his Wife are lucky it was only the dog
that was killed - and I'm certainly not saying that loosing their
beloved pet doesn't hurt alot.

Well given typical eye-witness indications of speed and such it's
debatable. So long as the car didn't get ripped apart they would.

You're absolutely right about that. What typical witnesses say is 80
MPH is actually more like 35 or 40.
I saw a picture of a Porsche that some teenaged girl had crashed into
a wall at 100 MPH; airbags won't help you if your car is smashed into
a PANCAKE about 2 feet thick.

On March 11, 2000, Cynthia Jay-Brennen, a cocktail waitress who had hit a
$34.9 million jackpot at the Desert Inn just six weeks previously, was left
a quadriplegic by an auto accident that claimed her sister's life. The pair
had been sitting in their car at a red light when their vehicle was
rear-ended by one being operated by a drunk driver. Five others were
injured in the resulting chain reaction accident.
A year later, 58-year old Clark Morse, the driver who caused this carnage
was sentenced to 28 years in prison. Morse, habitual drunk who had been
previously arrested at least 16 times in driving under the influence charges
had at least five DUI convictions, yet he had not prior to this incident
been jailed for his inebriated forays behind the wheel.

It's a sad story, but I'd be surprised if even half of it was true.
The driver obviously didn't hit the dog on purpose, at 8 pm it was dark
and having a dog on a 6' leach while crossing a street is not very
smart. And had he hit it on propose he wouldn't have been startled and
crashed afterwards, probably trying to avoid it...

I'll explain then. Some of them, most possibly even, have great 'personalities'
and become part of the family. I never fail to be amazed by them.
To treat them just as objects fails to acknowledge their true value to humans.
