Would bumper-mounted airbags help?

They'd be deployed by a collision sensor. They should reduce the

Eat sh.t and die, you dumb whore.  I'm sick of these "solutions" to car
crashes that involve raising car prices by a $1000 - and for everyone,
even the good drivers. You want to reduce the incredible highway
carnage, then go after the BAD drivers that are the cause. We need
license suspensions and jail time for speeders and drunk drivers and
red light runners.  And a mandatory 20 year minimum for anyone found at
fault in a fatal crash.

Don't make the good drivers pay - Make the bad drivers pay.

A bunch of airbags can be used if they're for rollover impacts, like
when driving off of a cliff.  Other uses for normal traffic problems are
silly.  We need better drivers and safer roadways, not better methods of
crashing.

Very little.

The total energy transferred in an accident would be little changed but the
instantaneous forces would probably be reduced a bit.

Compare with the 'hydraulic buffers' on my Saab !

They wouldn't do a thing.  The massive crushing damage you see in many
collisions is not because they can't build the car strong enough, but
rather the body itself is acting as a sort of airbag.  The idea is
instead of stopping you instantly, it slows you down over some distance
by folding and bending up.  So essentially you are right now driving an
airbag, but it needs to be steel or some kind of metal due to the great
masses involved.

It's more like a ball of loosely-crumpled tinfoil than an airbag, but
you are absolutely correct: the car is designed to crumple up and
allow the deceleration to occur over a longer distance, lessening the
damage to the vehicle's occupants.

A wise choice. The first car I know of designed in this manner was the P6 Rover
introduced in 1963 IIRC.

The concept was devised and patented by one Bela Barenyi who
worked on it for Daimler-Benz in the 1950s.
