Why doesn't Detroit make a car BUILT for low speeds

Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS - 20 Jan 2007 16:06 GMT A car with a speed limiter set at say 70 mph. Lots of people would love that esp if they have teenage boys in the family. And I'm sure insurance premiums would be a lot less too. To keep owners from tampering with the limiter, the insurance companies could put a clause in the policy saying that tampering would nullify the policy. And it would also mean no lying cop could accuse you of doing 80 mph. That would save you speeding fines and in the event of a fatal crash might keep you out of jail.
Lots of benefits to speed limited cars and yet no car maker will build one.!! Car crashes are big business and they don't want the gravy train to end.

Check out the chevy (daewoo?, I think) aveo. Good luck getting that sucker up to 85 if you are headed downhill with the wind at your back. And there's the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent (same vehicle?). Scion (Toyota) xA is another good one, if it's slow you are looking for.

Actually there are speed limiters: the "redline" engine speed as indicated on the models that have a tachometer. My vehicle redlines at 5000 rpm. I never have the rpm above 3000 as that would have me at 90 mph. Given the condition of most highways in Missouri, that speed is NUTS! 2000 rpm gets me at 60 which is more reasonable on the 2-lane roads.
Also, the higher the engine revs, the louder the noise. <lure> It would be more of a distraction than a radio! </lure>

Because Americans drive status symbols, not transportation appliances. If you can't haul 8 fat a.ses at 120MPH until a tire blows and flips your vehicle sideways 20 times before it erupts into a giant fireball... you lose. Not that you'd ever want or need to do that. Oh don't give us that crap. That might be true if genuine competition existed in the industry but with only two domestic manufacturers that is clearly not the case. The auto industry makes billions every year replacing and repairing crash damage and that's why they make fast cars and glamorize fast driving in their commercials.

You actually believe car companies MAKE money off of crashes? You don't think they spend millions and millions on both in-house attorneys and outside counsel defending all of the lawsuits they're hit with as a result of these crashes, alleging defective manufacture or design? And that's not counting the millions and millions in settlements they pay out every year.
And do you believe the people who think their car contributed to the crash they were in go out and buy a car from the same manufacturer?

Maybe you need to ride a moped or a scooter for awhile, Judy. Then you'd understand why driving slowly on highways is a problem. My college aged daughter had a scooter for about 6 months, and sold it because she felt it was a safety hazard.

Dave - 21 Jan 2007 20:01 GMT >> Maybe you need to ride a moped or a scooter for awhile, Judy. Then you'd >> understand why driving slowly on highways is a problem. My college aged [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Graham That's an understatement. People rolling at speed past stop lines and then making HARD stops (with their nose in your travel lane) are commonplace. When you are driving a car/truck/SUV, it's no big deal. When you are riding a motorcycle? Heart-attack time, every few blocks. Fact is, you don't KNOW if that driver will stop, if he sees you, etc. That's just one example. People turning left in front of you, crossing your lane of traffic (while you are riding a motorcycle) is more common than people pulling the same stunt on you when you are driving a car. Fact is, when you are on two wheels, you have to ride like everyone on 4 wheels is deliberately trying to murder you. That is the only way to stay alive. Note I said nothing about riding safely, I said it is the only way to stay alive. Believe it. -Dave

> replacing and repairing crash damage and that's why they make fast cars > and glamorize fast driving in their commercials. Actually that's a very interesting point I've never considered. Could be a lot of truth in it.

krp - 21 Jan 2007 14:26 GMT >A car with a speed limiter set at say 70 mph. Lots of people would love > that esp if they have teenage boys in the family. ALL American cars have those limiters! It's call the RIGHT FOOT BOZO!

Driving above the speed limit is rarely the sole reason for the accident. The gravy train can continue even with your plan!!!

Now there's another of your really really stupid arguments. Everyone agrees that crashes will still occur even if people drive slowly. But it will make a big dent in the huge problem. You're another of these morons that think no solution to a problem should be considered unless it solves the problem totally!!! You are so stupid.

Have you looked at the death rate per mile for freeways compared to city streets?

Almost every car I'm aware of (Detroit, Japan, Germany, Sweden, France, UK) is built for low speed. Any of them will do 15mph to 50mpg with no problem.
