26 lanes wide. 356,000+ vehicles per day. Until it was rebuilt in
1997, it was one of the most congested freeway interchanges in the
universe. Even today it is one of the busiest. And now I invite you to
drive through it with me...

I'm sorta like the Alfred Hitchcock of road videos - I always put a
banana cameo somewhere in each one. :)

It took nerves of steel not to slow down, but I held my ground,
dammit! :)

Maybe you can redo the shoot in a vehicle a littel higher that can give
us a complete view of the interchange? ;)

And the timing of the music was beautiful, the singer going Tra-la-la-
la-la.... while you were not giving in to the merger....  :P

Sure! Which kind of SUV are you going to buy me for my camera car? :)

There were also a lot of "banana-buggies" going "over hill and
highway." :)

Very cool!!! Thank you!

Good video on both versions, BTW.

Take care,

Thanks for the ride. Nice interchange. (and I still like the choice of
background music ;)  ) One of these days, I'm going to get off my cheap
a.s and get a video camera. Not that there is much to show in my
area....

The one I use now was 100 bucks on eBay.

Not a problem! You can always fly 4000 miles round trip to another
part of the country, rent a Scion xB, and drive another 900 miles
talking videos of other areas without much to show. :)

Hi Dave,

You would think that 356,000 vpd is already busy enough, but that
number was surpassed several years ago.  According to CalTrans, the
stretch of I-5, just south of the I-405, carried 387,000 vpd in 2005.

Yeah, the 356,000 figure was from 2002, and I didn't know offhand
where to find more up-to-date figures quickly, so I just tacked on a
'+'.

Um, that Analog Hyperlink does not appear to be working:

Very nice. For those of us who are not as familiar with the "Y", can
you elaborate on direction, roadway, etc that you are on while filming?

Certianly. I was on the exit ramp from the southbound 5 that leads to
the Lake Forest exit. It's the very high ramp in the center of this
photo:

http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=El+Toro,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=33.64667

This ramp is a flyover that allows the 405 to pass beneath it, so it
offers a nice vantage point to view the entire interchange. In
retrospect, it would have worked better if I had been driving a
high-profile vehicle; my ground-hugging sports car just can't see over
the damn K-rail! :-/
