Sorry if i'm late to the party, i'm sure this has come up before..

Highway construction zone, 3 lane highway. More than a mile prior there
are warning signs to merge right, left lane closed ahead. Most people
do that and get in the slower middle or right lanes.

Perfect opportunity for the MFFYs to fly down the left lane all the way
to the construction crew,
and then forcibily merge right. So common that the middle lane slows to
a halt as drivers there let 2 or more cars from the work zone cut in.

Personally, I make it my business to stay in the middle lane and do
whatever i can do to obstruct the MFFY's from getting over. Just this
morning I did this and had an angry driver chase after me until he
could catch up to give me the salute. I was happy to salute him back.

and the State Police sit in their cruisers and... do nothing.

What's so rare about that?  It does not even need to be a construction
zone for jokers to jockey for position right before any lane loss.
It's jokers like that who make traffic backups unnecessarily long.

Aroud here, some call those who dutifully let the MFFY's cut in to the
line and slow the rest of us JLEDI's (stands for Just Let 'Em Do it).

<evil grin> I salute you (in a good way) for your joining the ranks of
us JDLEDIs (Just Don't Let 'Em Do It). There's an example of JDLEDI in
this video, courtesey of another regular here:

But ofcourse. There's doughnuts in that car to be eaten. Though
seriously, some construction sites might require a cruiser there with
its lights going to get drivers attention and to get them to slow down
for the workzone.

Hate to say it, but no, I haven't (or atleast I haven't heard of it
referred to as a "zipper.") Please enlighten me.....

"The zipper" is where the two lanes remain completely full until the
merge point, and then everyone slows to a crawl and drivers from each
lane alternately enter the venturi. There have been several
ridiculously long threads about which is better. The conclusion is
usually that the zipper is appropriate only if traffic conditions are
so heavy that everyone is crawling along anyway; if traffic is light
and moving at full speed, finding a gap and merging earlier means
nobody has to slow down through the merge point.

OK. I *have* seen these (I-81 in PA where the signs stated "use both
lanes up to merge point," or somthing similar a few years ago) and yes,
traffic was very heavy at the time.

In the Midlands of England, two roundabouts are about 1/4 apart. At the
first one is a sign, "Right lane closed ahead."
Everyone stays in the LH (kerb) lane.
back-up stops new traffic from entering the first roundabout.
I got into the RH lane and we zippered quite nicely at the next
roundabout.
Taught the Mothercountry something.

Watch out! You're likely to get flamed for intentionally blocking "the
zipper."

I think it's unreasonable to merge too early while a perfectly good
driving lane sits empty.  One mile would be a maximum for me.  The 1500
ft sign is a good place to start finding a gap.
When people try to block my merge I keep moving forward to find an
opening.  That way I don't hold up anyone behind me and also get the
satisfaction of ending up ahead of the discourteous driver.

Don't be silly. If you get through the choke point at full speed, what
difference does it make when you merged?

What do you want them to do?

Pull you over for failing to maintain a lane and intentionally
obstructing traffic?

Recently I came across a sign warning us that the right lane was closed
ahead.  Everyone merged immediately, even before a traffic light.  It
seemed kind of ridiculous to me so I just cruised up to the light and
made a right to avoid the train wreck ahead (There literally was a train
wreck that had caused the lane closure).
