Why, they ask. Why is this girl and her boyfriend dead? Gee whizzy sh.t,
is it bad luck? bad karma? let's try to make sense of this
tragedy.........
How about this: girl speeding and driving irresposibly, leaving one side
of the road, then going into the opposing lane, then jerking back and
leaving
the right side of the road. My guess: she was speeding and paying very
little attention to what the hell she was doing. There ain't no mystery to
it.
if this grieving dad had taught his kid to be a more careful driver, he
wouldn't
be squatting over her little roadside memorial now, just glad she didn't
take more innocents with her.

I doubt if speeding was involved here. To me, it looks like a few mistakes
that can easily be chalked up to inexperience. First, inattentive/drifted
off the road to the right. It happens to everybody, but more frequently
when you are inexperienced. Second, didn't re-enter road correctly. Most
likely, she just immediately jerked the steering wheel to the left, which is
the instinctive reaction, and the wrong thing to do. Probably got the right
rear tire hung on the edge of the road momentarily, which caused the vehicle
to aim itself into opposing traffic. At this point, the situation was all
but recoverable. To say the driver over-corrected and drove off the right
side of the road? Well, I'm not sure too many drivers of any experience
level could have recovered at that point without leaving the roadway, so the
point is kinda moot.
But anyway, inexperience alone was more than sufficient to cause this
tragedy. I really doubt speeding was a factor, at all. It's easy for most
to ASSUME that something like this was caused by speeding, as most drivers
don't realize the momentum that accumulates in a vehicle AT the speed limit.
As soon as the car drifts off the road and goes sideways trying to re-enter,
it doesn't matter whether the car was speeding or not. At the speed limit
alone (or even under the limit), an inexperienced driver is in deep
oo-doo. -Dave

A couple of points though....one of the first things I was taught, along
with using the same foot for gas and brake in an automatic, was
NEVER to overcorrect, and it has saved my bacon a couple of times.
I see kids like this all day..they speed and tailgate and screw around
with cell phones, etc. i don't think it's much of a stretch to conclude
she was likely speeding. You should've seen the vehicle.

There's no mention in the article about speeding being a factor. It
sounds like a classic case of not paying enough attention to one's driving.

That, and other obvious mistakes related to inexperience. -Dave
