50-car pileup in Pa. snowstorm kills one Interstate 90 shut for hours after accident; several people slightly injured ERIE, Pa. - A chain-reaction crash on a snowy interstate highway involving about 50 vehicles, including an ambulance carrying patients, killed one person Thursday, officials said.
Authorities were not releasing information on the death. It was unclear whether anyone in the ambulance was injured.
Erie was expected to get up to 6 inches of snow Thursday.

In america no one ever slows down for a snowstorm. That would mean the snowstorm has won.

It could be that the storm appeared to come out of nowhere. Remember, this is winter, storms can move fairly fast.

With sheriffs deputies furiously flagging traffic out in the middle of the road, the idiots continue along at high speed until they hit an overpass. Then they slide right into the pileup ahead of them, the one they could not see until after it's too late.
One thousand five hundred (1,500) cars crashed in 24 hours.

Now that's a spectacle worth booking a hotel room for. Get a room with a balcony overlooking the freeway, sit out there with your camcorder on a tripod, and repeatedly take beers from your cooler while you watch the show. Then sell a copy of the tape to the local TV station, which covers the cost of your room, your beer, and maybe even a couple of hookers. :)

Citizen Bob - 28 Jan 2007 13:36 GMT >>They do however slow down for the kind of traffic density that leads >to 50 car pileups. Not in Houston. The last ice storm we had in 1996 (IIRC) led to 1,500 car accidents because of slippery roads.
The fools drive 70-80 mph and hit a slick overpass and then run right into the pileup that they could not see until it was too late.
I saw it live on TV once. It is a frightful sight seeing cars speed right into that pileup, completely ignoring the sheriffs deputies who are furiously trying to flag motorists down.
The traffic authorities did not take any chances when we were threatened this time ( a couple weeks ago). They simply shut down many of the roads before hand. Fortunately the ice storm never got to Houston.

It's safer when it snows - then some cars can't get up the overpass. Some drivers think if their front wheels are spinning, it will help if they stomp the accelerator even more.

What IS right is to drive the proper speed for conditions, whether it's 85 MPH on a dry day with light traffic, or 15 MPH in a blizzard.

That area is notorious for sudden heavy snow. I've been caught in that exact same area where 2 feet of snow has fallen...in early April.
The problem isn't necessarily that people are speeding but rather that most don't know how to drive in snow. Look at what happens when snow falls in Virginia and points southward. A lot of seasoned veterans have a better idea of how to drive in snow but when a sudden whiteout occurs and you can't see the cars around you, all bets are off.

Of course there is the 'sudden white-out' (snow) or 'brown out' (dust). where there just isn't time to establish a good following distance before you are in the soup.

>And talking on a cellphone. This is not a topic for humor. When I first moved to Houston I used to drive past a school and there was this middle-aged woman working the school zone crossing. Every morning she was there, even in bad weather. She was a local fixture.
Then one day she disappeared. A couple days later there was a wreath of flowers at the intersection. Later they named the nearby park after her.
Some drunk cretin mowed her down.
