Driver in deadly crash out on bail
FORT WORTH -- The 21-year-old man accused of driving drunk and slamming
into the rear of a parked police car last month, killing Fort Worth
police officer Dwayne Freeto, has been released from the Tarrant County
Jail.
Samuel Lee Hilburn, who has been charged with intoxication manslaughter
in Freeto's death, was released Friday afternoon after posting $100,000
bail, according to jail officials.
Hilburn, who was severely injured in the crash, had been in custody since
the Dec. 17 wreck. Law enforcement authorities guarded him while he was
hospitalized at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and later at John
Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
On Jan. 11, Hilburn was transferred to the Tarrant County Jail.
Among the conditions of his release Friday afternoon, Hilburn was ordered
to wear an ankle monitor that detects alcohol in his system; to install
an interlock device -- a breath machine that detects alcohol -- on any
car he drives; and not to possess or consume alcohol or a controlled
substance without a doctor's prescription.
Police have said that Hilburn was drunk and speeding when he crashed a
Lexus into Freeto's patrol car on Interstate 35W. The impact started a
fire and pinned Freeto in his seat.
Freeto, a 34-year-old father of two girls, had stopped to help a woman
with a flat tire. He died at the scene.
Hilburn had declined the Star-Telegram's request for a jailhouse
interview.
