Near Milwaukee, a local TV station (CBS 58) had a TV crew out at Big
Muskeo Lake doing a story about being on thin lake ice, when they
discovered, first-hand, the dangers of it.

I happened to see that footage on a Kansas City channel when I got
home from work.  Apparently the reporter failed to discern the
difference between a back road and a frozen pond.

Reminds me.  I have a newspaper from, I think, back in November or
early December from Kamloops BC.  Reports where some ice fishermen
drove out, hit a soft spot and the truck broke through on front,
slowly sinking they escaped.  They then drove another truck out to
pull it out.  Yep, the other one did the same and both sunk in deep
water.  Brain surgions were they.  I just _have_ to dig that out of
the recycle bin and post the article.

Well, while it's almost inconceivable that you wouldn't be able to
drive on lakes during the winter in Wisconsin, this one has been
unusually warm, so a vehicle breaking through ice is really a novelty
here.  Unfortunately, it forced the cancellation of a planned BMW/Audi
club ice driving school I was going to help teach.  >:^(
