Thanks to that great storm in the midwest, look for more great videos
of shitheads sliding into each other on snow and ice to hit the
Internet RSN. If Brent or 223rem only had video cameras, we'd have
seen some already. :)

You keep this up; I'll have to invest in a video camera myself. ;)

I was wishing I had one the other day in St. Louis.  I took some
photos of unsigned MO 799.  That's the official designation of the ML
King Bridge on the Missouri side.  The video would have lasted 30
seconds.

Scott, do you use a webcam+laptop setup?

Not anymore. The framerate isn't so great, and for not much more money
you can get a used camcorder on eBay.

This video was shot with a laptop + webcam:

This one was shot with a Hi8 camcorder:

The webcam was about $80; the camcorder was $107.

How and where did you mount the camcorder? Me, I'm thinking of using
velcro, my camcorder is light enough for that.

Scroll down to the "SM31 Camcorder Window Mount" section and you'll
see photos of exactly what I did.

Please post your first video - especially the part where the adhesive
backing on the velcro loses its grip on your dash and your camera goes
flying. :)

Actually all I saw this weekend was an SUV bashed in on both ends on the
NB edens expressway as I was heading southbound. I stayed off the roads
during the ice storm because the idiotcy out there.

I agree, stay off the roads - but taking a nice, brisk walk with your
camcorder might have proven fruitful. :)

I did take a walk out to the main road, the sleeting rain would have
likely destroyed a typical camcorder without some special protection.
But yeah, I should get a digital camcorder so I can show some videos...

Could have had a good one today... as I was going southbound out of the
loop some asshat comes down the left hand on ramp immediately before the
right hand exit to the ike. Takes that SUV all the way across all lanes
without any concern to whom is being cut off. Driver in front of me had to
nail the brakes pretty hard to avoid a collision. And it wasn't that this
person was clueless, the move showed that the driver had every intent on
doing that and probably had done it before. Of course reasonable people
just drive a couple blocks on the surface streets and enter directly on to
the ike.

I thought they were going to eliminate all of those left-side ramps?
Or is that just on the Ryan?

But yeah, I have missed TONS of great footage because I didn't have a
camcorder set up and taping. Ideally, I would like to get a small
"lipstick" camera, mount it permanently inside the car, and connect it
to a permanently-mounted digital recorder with removable memory cards.
The recorder would continually record video into a ring buffer, with
the newest material automatically overwriting the oldest. If something
happens that I want to save, I can hit a button and dump the contents
of the ring buffer into a file. To get the recorded video out of the
car, I just pop out the memory card and bring it over to my main
computer inside the house.

ChaseCam makes something that would work, but it's pretty expensive:

$600(!!!) for the recorder, plus another $275(!!!) for the camera. My
3-CCD miniDV camcorder cost less than that!

There are no left ramps on at least what I consider the ryan proper and
are from about 10th on the south to ohio on the north. They have closed
every other one. So it's not a total elimination, just half of them.

Yeah... that's the kind of set up I would like, but the cost is more than
I want to spend on it. But maybe it would be worth it just for self
protection.

They just closed them? Not replaced?

Sheesh! IDOT sucks!! :)

I suspect you could build something yourself for less - IF you are
good at embedded systems. Maybe an ARM9-based microcontroller with a
hardware video compression chip and an SD card slot... How are your
hardware design skills? :)

Actually a little more than closed, they cut a section out of the
structure so nothing can drive down them without taking a 10 foot fall..

All I do is hardware design... gears, drive shafts, brackets, housings,
cutters, etc etc.... But somehow I think a mechanical computer is going
to be a wee bit too big.
