My guess is, due to the age, that the kid was distracted.

Sorry, but many legal American citizens have the surname, Sanchez.  Even
if she weren't American, she could be a Spaniard, or from any other
country south of the Rio Grande.

I lived in New Mexico in 1994, and there were STILL a lot of full-
service gas stations in rural areas at that time (as compared to
California, where only the richest areas have a few rare stations
which still had/have full-service pumps) - perhaps they don't have the
GIANT SIGNS we have here in California warning TURN OFF ENGINE - NO
SMOKING.   ... but I agree - we DO NOT need the warning signs in
SPANISH (nor Chinese, nor Swahili, or whatever).  Again, I hope this
young girl gets better, and that this kind of situation can be averted
in the future.
