Woman's Lighter Sparks Blaze at NM Pumps
Saturday, July 21, 2007
LA PLATA, N.M. — A 19-year-old woman caught fire after she was fiddling with a cigarette lighter as she pumped gas, authorities said.
Brianna Sanchez was at a Sun Dial gas station with her boyfriend Friday night when the incident occurred, said Sgt. Jackie Budd, a spokesman with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.
Budd called the incident a "freak accident" and said there was no reason to believe otherwise.
He said witnesses reported the woman was casually pumping gas and that she had a lighter in her hand. That's when flames shot out of the gas tank.
The woman and the immediate area caught fire. A person at the scene put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher.
Sanchez was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center with burns to her face and upper torso. Budd didn't know the extent of her injuries.

Budd didn't know the extent of her injuries. Other than the subject line, I'm amazed you held back on commentary. Didn't think you had the urge to exercise such restraint. Another fine curveball.
Sure, the last name raises the odds the airhead was Mex, but the American first name suggests a possibility of only part, if any, Mex. Suppose the warning on the pump was in English?
I didn't know whether to laugh or weep over the incident and its stupidity. Darwin was certainly licking his chops on this.
My guess is, due to the age, that the kid was distracted.

Bob Escher - 22 Jul 2007 10:00 GMT She may be a caucasian married to a Mexican
In either case parts of the gene pool are missing from her. And the instructions should be in English anyway. and anyone stupid enough to play with a lighter while playing with gas deserves to be added to the Darwin list

This is the United States and the warning is supposed to be in English.
Apparently anchor babies are not any better equipped to deal with advanced technology than their third world criminal parents.

Fred G. Mackey - 27 Jul 2007 05:16 GMT Sorry, but many legal American citizens have the surname, Sanchez. Even if she weren't American, she could be a Spaniard, or from any other country south of the Rio Grande.
f.ck you and your bigotry.
Having said that, she was a f.cking moron and it's too bad she escaped Darwin's clutches.
Are you going to deny that Americans can be stupid too?
Acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step to recovery. Admit you're an idiot.

But, I have yet to see you say anything about the racism and/or bigotry from the pro-illegal crowd. Yeah, I know, it doesn't bother you so much when people hate our country.

Budd didn't know the extent of her injuries. As there is nothing indicating Ms. Sanchez's immigration status, we have to assume that she is a FELLOW AMERICAN - so, this post is off- topic to alt.politics.immigration. Even if Ms. Sanchez was an illegal immigrant or an anchor baby, this post would be in poor taste on this group. Look - I've got a 19-year-old daughter (who BTW doesn't smoke, and who has taken Chemistry in High School and at UCR, and I believe would know intuitively the dangers of gasoline). I also had a brother who had suffered burns from boiling radiator water due to a burst radiator hose at this same age. My point is, this story concerns me as a human being, and I hope Ms. Sanchez's injuries are minimal, and that she recovers completely, and that the State of NM (schools, MVD) and all parents can do a better job of teaching kids the danger of gasoline and fire (and other safety/burn hazards involving automobiles).
I lived in New Mexico in 1994, and there were STILL a lot of full- service gas stations in rural areas at that time (as compared to California, where only the richest areas have a few rare stations which still had/have full-service pumps) - perhaps they don't have the GIANT SIGNS we have here in California warning TURN OFF ENGINE - NO SMOKING. ... but I agree - we DO NOT need the warning signs in SPANISH (nor Chinese, nor Swahili, or whatever). Again, I hope this young girl gets better, and that this kind of situation can be averted in the future.
