U.S. Traffic Deaths Fall to Five Year Low

Monday, July 23, 2007

ST. LOUIS —  Traffic deaths in the United States fell to their lowest
level in five years in 2006, and a federal agency credited strong law
enforcement and vehicle safety features as important factors in the decline.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said 42,642 people
were killed in highway crashes last year, a drop from the 43,510 in 2005.

"To me, that is 868 families that didn't get the terrible call that a
loved one was killed in a motor vehicle accident," said the agency's
administrator, Nicole Nason. She released the annual findings at the
33rd International Forum on Traffic Records and Highway Safety Systems
in St. Louis.

Her announcement was met with applause from the audience members from
around the country, who record traffic data.

There's lots of us out there saying that criminal drivers like you are
killers. I predict within a few years speeders will be equated with
child molesters, as they should be.  How many kids have you crippled,
psycho-boy?

What's abundantly clear is that the death rates went down WITHOUT any
reductions in speed limits. In fact, the speed limit actually went UP
in places like Texas.

I'm actually shocked that you would draw attention to the fact that
you were DEAD WRONG - *again*!

LOL!

And this with speed limits continuing to rise!!!  Blows every theory

Speed limits are NOT rising, you moron.  And even if they were, the
important thing is people are driving slower because they know speeders
are kid-killers. Have a perfect day, psycho-boy.

Actually, he's right. Speed limits have risen and average traffic
speeds have risen as well, and nothing that you've been calling for
has actually occurred (IOW, not only are there not tough jail
sentences for speeders, there are NO jail sentences for speeders, so
your campaign has accomplished nothing), therefore not only can you
*not* claim credit for lower fatalities since your platform hasn't
been put into practice, but the opposite of what you call for has
occurred, yet fatalities have fallen. It seems that doing the opposite
of what you advicate would actually cut fatalities.

The cuts in fatalities are, from what I've read, almost
completely unrelated to speed limits (up or down).
They're more a matter of improving automobile crash
survival technology, better highway design and
improvements in emergency trauma care technology.

Thank you! Exactly as I pointed out, the OP's claim that his call for
jailing of speeders had nothing at all to do with it. Speeds and speed
limits are up, not down.

There's also the benefit next year that Lindsay Lohan will likely do
some serious time behind bars. That should save a few thousand more
innocents.

True.

Older cars without air bags are replaced with cars with air bags.

More motorists wear their seat belts.

More aggressive enforcement and education against bad driving,
including DWI.

Roads are always being upgraded with various crash prevention and
crash survival technology.  For instance, on I-95 a cable barrier was
added to a wide grassy median strip.  Already stopped a few cars from
crossing over.  An old 1950s overcrowded expressway is rebuilt with
decent merge ramps and the like.

Right. CT Pre-NMSL(Nixon Memorial Speed Limit)limit: 60 MPH; post NMSL-65
MPH, NJ likewise. TX statutory limit pre-NMSL was 70 statewide. There are
now 75 and 80MPH zones.

Today cars are much safer and we have better tools (cell phones) and
better and quicker medical care than we did during the Nixon years.

I too am tired of how we coddle people who maim and kill with their cars.
If I stand by the side of the road and fire a rifle indiscriminantly and I
kill, I'll be charged with murder.  However I get liquored up and drive
and same highway, kill the same person, it's a "whoopsies", I get a slap
on the wrist and my license back.
