Public Transportation - You Don't Want To Go There

News Item:

"The Manhattan borough president wants more police in the subways to fend off
perverts who attack straphangers.

Scott Stringer's office asked commuters how often someone sexually attacked or
harassed them in the subway, and found frightening results. More than 60
percent of those who responded to the online study said they were sexually
harassed and 10 percent said they'd been sexually assaulted."

Funny, I've never been sexually harrassed or assaulted in my car.

Sure, take public transportation and stand on some train platform all
vulnerable because places that build lots of public transport also, likely as
not, have laws against effective self defense by prohibiting the concealed
carry of personal firearms.

Build roads.  Lots more roads.

Thousands of teenaged girls get sexually harrassed in cars every day -
it's called DATING. OBTW, have you never heard of carjacking? Do you
not think it could happen to you?

I ride public transit every day, and I've never been sexually
harrassed, nor do I know of anyone who has been. My anecdotes trump
your anecdote.

The 210 extension that opened in SoCal last Tuesday is 7 miles long,
took 4 years to build, DECADES to plan, and cost $33 MILLION per MILE.

It wouold be cheaper (and faster) to station an entire squad of police
in every commuter railcar.

Stop goldplating and enviroplating them.

Except then there'd be little room for riders.  And there'd still be
harassment, mostly by the cops.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but certain accounting practices can
 result in a fully-depreciated one.

Well, at least it wasn't by a stranger, eh?

That's not sexual...

I think it's real unlikely.

Mine's not an anecdote, its a study.

So, after centuries of roadbuilding, this country is suddenly too poor to build
roads?

But you and I both know that's not going to happen.

Where's the study from? Please provide a cite. Although I don't live in
NYC, I have ridden the subway there many times. No problem. I even carry
a Metrocard in my wallet and I expect to use it again next week. A dear
friend of mine who has lived in Manhattan for decades who doesn't own a
car has also never had a problem on the subway.

My mistake - its not a study, but a survey:

Apparently a lot of people are having problems with it.

It can be. Many women have been carjacked, told to drive to some
remote location, where they were then raped. Then the perp either
kills her or dumps her out and drives away in her car.

So is being sexually assaulted on a train (except, apparently, in
NYC).

Too poor to build ENOUGH roads to meet current (much less future)
demand at current levels of (in)efficiency.

We also know that getting all the roads we "need" built isn't going to
happen, either.
