The Route G10 videos that never were...

Carl Rogers - 29 Jul 2007 06:06 GMT Hi All,
The Worldwide Highway Library is known to screen its videos for what it considers the utmost in quality. You get the roads, some destinations along that road, and quite often a bit of micro-trivia surrounding it. What happens behind the scenes could take several takes in one given location, whereas in some locations, we can pull it off in just one take.
You've probably seen out Santa Clara County Route G10 video ( http://tinyurl.com/344blr ) already. Well, that wasn't the route's only candidate for release... One conspicuous candidate did not make the chopping-block because the sun was descending, causing my handsome visage to be hidden:
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/tmp/scc-g10_outake1.wmv
Had it not been for the sun's astute change in patterns, this would have been the G10 video you originally saw! And ladies, don't forget to feed your man before he does anything productive. Else, something like this may happen:
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/tmp/scc-g10-outake2.wmv
When it officially posts content, the Worldwide Highway Library re-iterates its position as a clear *multimedia* leader in transportation enthusiasm. Its dedication to its quality standards have kept the hobby alive and well. With its ever-growing number of visitors from 97 countries, it's not surprising that competing sites have subsequently followed by creating their own road video--be it genuine or satirical! Bottom line: we lead, they follow. Stay tuned for more highway videos, photos and topic-relevant multimedia reviews. There's more around the bend!

When was it, exactly, that Alex Nitzman started videoing his road trips?

It's comments like this, Carl, which are why you have such a poor online reputation. You may dispute that, but the "almighty webhit" isn't a measure of popularity, and it DEFINATELY isn't a measure of reputation.

Back to HBE's question, Sherman more or less answered it...I'm not sure the exact year myself, but I know it was pre-2001. 2001 is when I started dabbling in videos myself (with limited results...gave up after 18 months to concentrate on photos).

To prove your point, bring in someone who never contributes to MTR and have them read the same material. Ask them the same question w/o poisoning the well first... From there, you would find shreds of truth.
Sleep well, and have a good one.

This is not evidence? I am not putting words in your mouth... merely repeating what you said.
As to my other assertion (that everything is about you), many of your posts sound very self-centered. If that is what, if you'll pardon the cliche, floats your boat then go ahead and continue to do it. However, many people here on MTR find it annoying, but perhaps that is your intention: to be annoying?
Oh, I WILL sleep well. I have no reason to be afraid of you (besides "fear is an illusion").
I will not discuss this any further with you.
Oh, one more thing: please ask for my permission before you borrow any of my photos from other web pages.

If you wish to think deeper, that's your thing. Try going down the street to your local college and take a few courses in Critical Thinking. It'll change the way your perceive the world.

It's my intention to provide information on world highways. If others wish to make personal-attributions for whatever reasons, I may or may not respond. It's a simple as that.
> Oh, I WILL sleep well. I have no reason to be afraid of you (besides "fear > is an illusion"). > > I will not discuss this any further with you. That's fine. Take your ideology w/ you and keep it. It has nothing to w/ roads. I agree fear is an illusion, so we're in agreement there. I'm glad you're not afraid of me, because there was never any attempt from myself to solicit fear out of you. If your statement about "being afraid" helped liberate yourself (as an individual), I'm proud of you.

You certainly wouldn't want the reader to default to >his or her perception of the third-person! :-) I was referring to Mr. Nitzman. He and Andy Field presented the bulk of their initial AAroads.com photo offerings as "vidcaps" or stills extracted from videos.
I tried my hand at trying to capture video stills from a VHS-C camcorder fed through an old PowerMac 6500 with a video card years ago but didn't have any luck stopping the tape at just the right moment. Somewhere on tapes I have a very unusual IND 111 sign with an odd font, and the last Kentucky button copy guide sign (a sign for KY 236/Erlanger overhead-mounted to one of the I-275 flyover ramps crossing the southbound lanes of I-71 & I-75 in Northern Kentucky.
I also videotaped my first long-distance overnight road trip in 2000, to West Virginia and Virginia to check out the proposed alignment of Corridor H back when it ended west of Elkins, WV.

Do you have a video card on your current box? If so, you may be able to capture stills using your video player. I can do that with MPlayer. Or you could bang the vids to DVD with a dual well recorder, and capture the stills from DVD.

Thanks for the clarification; you're a stand-up guy. That's cool to know; Andy and Alex have done a lot for this hobby. (You have too!) Those vidcaps probably made the subsequent screencaps a lot easier to select what was best for their website. I remember struggling w/ road photographs several years ago, because single still-shots were taken from a moving vehicle. My camera at the time was a Sony CD Mavica, whose latency any between shows was less than stellar because of those dang CD-writes after each shot. :|

Me too. Especially the videos of Dallas, Texas. I don't drive out there too often, but when I do it brings back memories of past road trips.
Alan Hamilton was my inspiration to start posting. When I read his US 70 end-to-end story, that's how i found about usenet. It wasn't long before I figured out how to use my newsreader(at the time) and start posting.
Seeing as how Richard Moeur and Alan Hamilton don't post here anymore, and Jason moved to Nevada, I feel it's my duty... ok, maybe not so much my duty, but it gives me an opportunity to step in and help keep the roadgeek community informed on Metro Phoenix happenings. One might say that at the moment, I'm the Phoenix Roadgeek pro tem :-)

I was inspired to start reading/posting to MTR by Alan Hamilton's US 70 end-to-end story, whose website I found in Richard Moeur's links, whose website had a link on ADOT's website at the time, whose website I found out about after seeing a news story on TV about an upcoming road project. . . For some reason, I feel the need to mention Kevin Bacon. :-)
Well, Alan doesn't post here anymore. Nor does Richard Moeur. Jason moved to Nevada, so I feel it's my duty... ok, maybe not so much duty, but a good opportunity to step in and help keep the Phoenix related discussions going. Of course, Chuck and Jason still contribute Phx material on a regular basis, but at the moment I think I'm the only MTR regular who resides in Phoenix..
