<...>

The furor over Virginia's "civil remedial fees" (more info) has given
hope to opponents of similar taxes in Michigan and Texas designed to
raise revenue by imposing mandatory fees of between $100 and $7500 for
various driving-related offenses.

<...>

Three sitting district court and one circuit court judge testified before
lawmakers about the issue last December. Each suggested that the
short-term revenue gain was not worth the long-term damage done. The
judges provided several examples of low-income motorists, stopped for the
most minor of violations, who later found themselves in a financial trap
from which they could not escape.

Under a typical scenario, Michigan's Secretary of State will suspend a
driver's license if a single fee or tax is not paid, even if the bill had
been mailed to the wrong address. When this happens, a motorist
unwittingly driving under a suspended license, if stopped, faces a
mandatory $1000 ticket tax on top of a $150 license reinstatement fee.
Given the choice of feeding and housing one's family or paying the fine,
many opt to pay the rent.

"When you turn law-abiding people into criminals, they lose all respect
for the law," Judge Michael Jarreau testified. "I will almost never take
a guilty plea for driving with a suspended license."

Now at least one judge agrees that legislatively defining normal and
reasonable behavior as criminal destroys respect for the law.

But they're not law-abiding citizens.  Clearly they are breaking the
law and their crime is a deadly one that kills and maims children and
adults every year.  Decent people want stiff penalties for speeders.
We're not all coddlers like you.

Stupid nym shifting troll.

You'll learn soon enough that defining everyone a criminal and using
selective enforcement is tyranny. Just go do 40 in a 25 again where 40
was reasonable.

Then get rid of the fines and these "responsibility tax," money grabs
and send the speeders to jail instead. Get rid of the financial benefit
to government in traffic violations and make the government bear the
cost of punishment (like they have to do for real crimes) and then
maybe, just maybe, you will sound a little less like the tin foil hat
wearing k00k that you are.

Aunt Judy demonstrates its lack of understanding
of the concept of "</killfile>," and "<killfile>,"
and what a "thread," is:

"Now that takes nerve. You  claim to killfile
me TWICE in the same thread and you expect
people to take you seriously???"

Fine with me. I have for years been saying that speeding should be
punished with prison time instead of fines. That would mean
classifying speeding as a misdemeanor or felony - instead of an
infraction -  which would mean the accused has a right to a jury
trial.  I think that's why govts are loath to do it.  But i'm all for
it.

and when senior government officials ignore the law, they FORCE citizens to
take up arms against them. +

Dumbass, the person could have had a non-moving violation, not able to
pay the fine, then get their licensed suspended without even being
notified.

The big difference: the judge sees the effects of this stupid law
everyday, whereas, the legislators (our so-called "representatives"
(sic) if you will) simply go back to their country clubs and don't have
to deal with the misery that they cause.
