At least nine big rigs were involved in the pileup on northbound Highway 99 just south of Fresno, CHP officials said. No hazardous materials were spilled. "It looked like something out of a movie, walking up and seeing all the cars mangled and crushed," said CHP Officer Paul Solorzano, Jr. A 6-year-old boy and a 28-year-old man traveling in separate vehicles were killed in the chain-reaction collisions around 7:45 a.m., he said. "There was probably two-foot visibility in the fog when I got here. It was really bad," said Mike Bowman, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. How? Easy. Drivers have to think about how fast they're going rather than looking at a number on a sign and switching to autopilot. Dead straight section of limited access motorway with few cars on a clear sunny day, 90 - 100mph should be sweet. Residential street with kids playing nearby, 10-20mph. Raining or foggy? Depends how heavy/thick it was. The most sensible speed in some rain/fog could be 0 mph. The Northern Territory in Australia had no speed limits on rural roads up until the start of this year, they have now implemented a blanket 110km/h (70mph) open road speed limit, and a 130km/h (80mph) speed limit on major highways. Note that major highway's in the NT are two way roads in good condition. So far, the running total for road fatalities in the NT this year is 35, compared to 30 at the same time last year. With the introduction of speed limits, the road toll is going up. When there were no speed limits in the NT, typical cruising speeds on major highways used to be around 100km/h to 130km/h in good conditions. The occasional person would zoom by at 200km/h +. At night time the general rule of thumb was 80km/h max. Due to the amount of livestock and other animals that wonder the highways at night, traveling faster than this was nothing short of stupid. With the introduction of speed limits, lots of drivers, especially tourists, have begun sticking to the magic number on the sign, regardless of the conditions and hence, are having more accidents.
