Time to ban "brights feature" on headlights?

Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS - 20 Nov 2007 19:41 GMT Nobody but the deadly criminal speeders who drive over 70 at night need them and they obviously don't count. Many people use their brights at night but then forget about them and blind oncoming traffic and cause crashes.

I drive on many unlit local roads and need the high-beams to see the road ahead and am not a deadly criminal speeder.
But those who don't turn off the high-beams when they approach a car (in either direction) are rude. The ones approaching you can be alerted by flashing your lights, but the ones in back of you are more difficult since they blind you for a longer period of time and there's no obvious way to tell them to lower their lights.

It ought to be legal to smash out the brights of the car behind you at a stop light with a Mag-Lite or whatever suitable instrument you carry under your seat.

I've fired it out of a .22LR pistol (it won't feed but you can load it directly into the chamber).

It is amusing that the resident troll is against high-beams. In chicago, the cheap a.s beater driving types think the high-beams are the spare bulbs for the headlamps.
Some switch to highbeams once the first lowbeam burns out. Some wait until both do. In either case they won't replace their headlamp bulbs until all 4 are burned out.

Even the oncoming traffic can't tell you have your brights on.

Even the oncoming traffic can't tell you have your brights on. I own a '73 Ford. The sealed beams are probably better than most cars I've driven. Of course it has been upgraded to halogens.
I am guessing you are judging by people who flash high beams at you as far as their perception is concerned. This is a poor measurement as it is related to their degree of discomfort and their willingness to tell another driver he's doing something wrong. Sealed beams are generally so much less offensive to oncoming drivers they may not bother.
Now particular headlamps can be very bad, but the highbeams would still often be noticable because of the aim if not so much the brightness.

Why are some of the dumbest people in society given so much power?
Of course cops in IL tend to aim their headlamps up so even the low beams will create a lot of glare. I was told they do this to mask the lightbar on the top. As if people won't notice the extra glare and the high aimed headlamps. I'd say about 90% of the cars that approach from the rear with abnormally high aimed headlamps turn out to be cops or people/taxi drivers driving old police cruisers.

If you've got a passenger, vehicle powered hand held spot lights are useful and quick. I've also found flash lights suited for scuba diving to be rather effective as well.

The one time I tried it, the guy was too busy figuring out how to keep his vehicle on the road to be messing with firearms. The nose of his vehicle *dived* when I lit him up. He had decent dental work (at least his grimace was nice and shiny).

You do realize that outside of your bubble there are areas which don't have bright streetlamps all along the way, and so the extra visibility that high-beams provide in, say, roads through heavily forested rural areas, make driving much safer. OTOH, one headlight aimed toward space and one pointing at the ground makes driving dangerous, regardless of high-beams or not, so get rid of that beater of yours.
Sorta on topic, I remember in the past automatic high-beam dimmers being available on many vehicle models, but haven't heard about them much recently - how common are they nowadays? Are they offered on high end vehicles only?

My car came with those, and they're great. If they're properly aimed, they shouldn't blind oncoming drivers.

Plenty of people drive on rural roads or unlighted interstates at night, sh.t-for-brains. Maybe you need to focus on the road instead of on the lights of oncoming cars.
