snow tires

Wow.

Took the Porsche out for a spin since many of the secondary roads around
here still haven't received any TLC from the road crews.  I just mounted
my snow tires yesterday, they're Dunlop Winter Sport M3s.  They logged a
few miles last year, but none in snow - they're broken in but this is
the first chance I've had to use them as intended, and also the first
snow tires I've had that didn't weren't "traditional" snow tires (e.g.
looked like bias ply truck tires.)

I should have started running these years ago, the difference is really
incredible.  I was passing SUVs (no doubt running all-seasons) and the
car felt really sure-footed and stable.  Only spun the rears twice in
normal driving; once leaving a stop sign on a steep uphill slope with
lots of slush, and once pulling into my (unshoveled, as it's supposed to
thaw tomorrow anyway) driveway.

Yup, it really is all about the tires.  Definitely more confidence
inspiring than the Impala; FWD, ABS and traction control notwithstanding.

Curious here.  Put mine one last week and they are _noisy_, heard even
over the radio.  I am used to that when running studs but these are
studless.  Don't recall the brand - they are 3 years old now.

My snow tires (Bridgestone Blizzacks) aren't noisy at all.  Mine are
almost 5 years old now, but still have plenty of tread on them.  In
fact, they're quieter compared to my summer tires (Dunlop SP Sports).
