Rush hour isn't pretty in Atlanta!

Carl Rogers - 10 Dec 2007 06:17 GMT Hi Viatologists,
Courtesy of the Tennessean, a Nashville-based newspaper, here's a look at rush-hour traffic in Atlanta:
http://tinyurl.com/3ycy6m
I foresee many grimaces, teeth-grinding and stressed folk even though this metro-area has expanded the expressway into multiple through lanes. Widening on surrounding beltways and arterials may be the next step in keeping traffic moving forward.
As many of you may know, and on a related note, Atlanta's Interstate 75/85 duplex is one of the most congested thoroughfares--per capita--in the United States.

I much prefer 75/85 through (I'm able to get throught the city like shot through a barrel...), even with the congestion. Much the same as I prefer to do 95 through JAX as opposed to 295 or 9A around it.

That doesn't look so bad. traffic appears to be moving fairly well, actually. I'd trade that for the Cross-Bronx Expressway or the NJ Holland Tunnel approach.

That's what I was thinking; that the traffic seems to be flowing rather nicely. But then, that wouldn't be the first time that krl got something wrong.....

I can assure you that photo is NOT I-75/85 through Atlanta, I'm guessing it's I-20 but honestly I'm not 100% certain that it's ATL at all in the photo.

On I-85 South heading towards downtown traffic starts backing up at the GA-400 Merge (about 4 miles NE of the I-75/85 Brookwood Interchange) during late afternoon rush hour, go figure that one out.

I'm thinking somewhere along I-20 from the east or possibly I-285 a bit north of I-20... it is Atlanta, you can tell by the 191 Peachtree St. building (has two parts on top), the BoA building, etc. Those outlines match perfectly.

Looking at the C/D lanes in the lower left of the pic I'm guessing it's I-20 East of the city, facing NW.

Teaching people how to drive would keep traffic moving forward. Since the average individual can't be bothered with such trivial processes, though, let's just add more freakin' lanes.

We're due for the full meal tonight through tomorrow (though not expected to be as bad as in ought-deuce). Guess I better get some Pepto-Bismol, as that kind of weather can cause indigestion. It did provide me a chance to perform a successful function check of the transfer case on my Jeep.

I'm not worried about getting around, as far as handling the conditions per se. However, it's the other drivers that concern me...their IQ and sanity level is somewhere between that of S&DDAM and that of GPSTroll. I know, not a wide range there.
In about 3 weeks I'll be taking a 5-day break from the mess by escaping to Texas (D/FW & SA).

Sounds like tonight is going to be your turn. We've been getting it since Saturday, and this afternoon it finally warmed enough to give us a bit of a break. The worst is from Wentzville west and north. Wright City, Warrenton, Moscow Mills and Troy are all basically without power. I-70 was shut down in Montgomery County for a while on Sunday because of power lines down across the highway.
The Spfld, MO, Tulsa and OKC folks have been getting hammered pretty good, too

The freezing rain started about an hour ago and is expected to last through tomorrow with up to 2" ice accumulation, and possible snow tomorrow night of up to 1" on top of that. Just entering a vehicle may not be a viable option, let alone operating it to get to work.

JimKG@aol.com - 11 Dec 2007 05:53 GMT > > Hi Viatologists, > [quoted text clipped - 31 lines] > > - Show quoted text - I greatly beg to differ. I've seen and photographed almost every city east of the Mississippi and a few west to boot. Philly, Buffalo, Newark & Detroit are god-awful places and Baltimore (aside from the inner harbor) defines "in need of a good scrubbing" and New Orleans is in a class by itself. Aside from it's overall greatness most of New York City is pretty much in need of a bath too.
Yes, most big cities have issues and Atlanta is not perfect but it's newer and cleaner than most other places, especially those on the East Coast so I'd be interested in what exactly your criteria is and what you've seen to compare it against.

I wish the best for those that choose to live there. Not many do. Most commute to work there. That is partially the reason most cities are dirty. The people don't live there, and have no interest in keep it clean, maybe. The Business Interest that own the city don't figure appearance and maintenance help their bottom line, with exceptions, of course. One of the things not addressed by most cities is cleanliness. They may make you mow your lawn but perish the thought of the city scape and buildings being required to keep clean.

That seems terribly wasteful. Why scrubbing and then demolition? That's like hanging someone and then burning them at the stake.
Why don't you rethink your assertion and choose only one.
