What is the primary (read as most important and/or most effective)
safety system in a modern car?
Consider ABS, airbacks, AWD, traction control, and others of course.
Only 1 right answer, of course.

As this is a driving newsgroup, I'd have to go with the driver.
That said, most modern cars have piss poor primary safety systems. :)

Of course...the nut behind the steering wheel. When that part is in
the least bit dysfunctional, there's no newfangled part that can be
added to the vehicle that would guarantee safety.

Answer: An alert, competent driver.

Agreed but the driver isn't installed by the factory (yet).
I still say the most important safety *device* in a car is seatbelts. The rest help
avoid an accident but contribute a fraction to safety of what seatbelts do to save life
in the final analysis.

Agreed, although I am thankful (knock on wood) I haven't had to
utilize my seat belts. Guess that's what I get for operating vehicles
where an alert, competent driver is a standard feature. Interesting
how that equipment moves so easily from vehicle to vehicle. :-)

The driver.
BTW, what is an airback?

I had an airbag in my car before they became standard equipment, but I
divorced her.

The important safety system is a competent and attentive driver.
