that brings out the control-freak in people?

In the last two days everyone I've been behind on a two lane road has
been driving ten under until I go to pass them or the road opens up to a
4 lane where they end up going 10 over.

If only you had a few more ponies in that Mustang... :)

Did I say I was unsuccessful in passing? No. I passed them. They
accelerated, making a couple passes less safe than I would have liked.

Also, it takes awhile before a gap in traffic and a passing zone line up.

Today I was driving the mav, and couldn't get a gap big enough in case
the arsehole accelerated.

Hence the need for more horsepower.

There is no better feeling than punking down some MFFY a.shole with
overwhelming force when he tries to prevent you from passing him. Not
only did you foil his nefarious scheme, but you know he is back there
beating his steering wheel in frustration because you beat him at his
own game.

Or, to put it another way:

Leather driving gloves: $20
Minnetonka deerskin driving moccasins: $55
400HP Corvette: $43,000
The look on that MFFY's face when he floored it to try to stop you
from passing him but you effortlessly passed him anyway: PRICELESS!!

:)

You said my mustang, not my 6clyinder 1bbl maverick. Although the
maverick might end up with this:

What sort of power increase is an aluminum cylinder head going to buy
you?

I used to have a 1974 Mercury Vomit with a 250ci inline 6. It wasn't
exactly a neck-snapper, and I doubt a simple head swap would turn it
into one.

Actually, the restrictive log intake (same casting as the head) and the
head is almost  the entire problem with power production. That's why the
modifications done in oz were all in the head and intake before venturing
off into the overhead cam designs.

power robbing emissions equipment '74 and up just made things worse.

That looks like it'll be quite a bit of fun.  Any pics of the mav?
What are you going to do regarding valves, intake and carb/injection?
I've often thought it would be a fun vacation to fly out to one of the
saltless states, buy one of the old fun cars with a basic 6 & a solid
frame, and drive it back to NH where it could become a project car.
It'd be nice to build up the old 6 rather than just drop a monster
engine in it like so many people do.

The heads can be bought assembled, I'd go with the street package. Carb,
probably a simple 2bbl carter or motorcraft, intake they will also sell.
It's still in development. I'm taking the easy route and waiting until
they are all done before I decide.

I've never liked the 'put a V8 in it' routine. Each of the big 3 plus AMC
made solid inline sixes that were just intentionally crippled power wise.

That'll be cool.  Keep us posted, sounds like it'll be a cool ride.

I hear you on not being a big fan of the big engine swap.  I've seen
some that were a waste; the money spent could have gotten the same
amount of power out of the original, lighter engine.  Then again, I've
seen some that were awesome, with fully tuned big blocks and more
power than one can realistically use.  Anyway, I've heard so much good
stuff about the old inline sizes, I'd be very interested to pep one up
a little bit.  I knew a guy a while back that had something like 300K
on his old inline 6 classic pickup, and he was thinking of rebuilding
it "just to put a little of the pep back in it, and you know, because
it's a reason to tinker in my garage for a winter".

SOP is SOB, isn't it?  All to common here in MO.

They're just clueless.  I was stuck behind someone going 35 in a 50 on
a 2 lane road coming home from work Friday.

Like the morons that don't realize you have to give it a little more
gas when going uphill to keep your speed constant.

More likely they have the cruise control on, and the CC is not
sophisticated enough to maintain speed on hills and/or the driver is
too stupid to turn the overdrive gear off. People like this are
usually afraid they will break something if they hit the gas while the
CC is engaged, so they just putter along at SL-20 all the way up the
hill.

I've never seen a CC that didn't adjust accordingly.  The CC doesn't
car if you're going up or down hill, it only knows speed.

I have, lots of times.

My Tacoma pickup truck would always struggle on the 6% grades when
crossing the Laguna Mountains UNLESS I hit the "overdrive disable"
button. It would bog down and the transmission would "hunt"
annoyingly, resulting in an overall drop of 5-10 MPH.

I have seen the same behavior in other cars at the start of a grade;
we'll be cruising along at the same speed on the flats, but once we
start going uphill I find myself cathcing up to them. Why people don't
notice and/or don't correct this situation defies understanding.

Its not just on the two lanes. Tonight I was headed North on 9A out of
J-ville after the game and got stuck behind this bitch in a Jag who
passed me (after I had passed her) and then got in the left lane and
hung along side an SUV at 60PMH (posted 65). She finally got the hint
after the SUV was able to shave off this unwanted duckling and several
cars passed her on the right, a few waving fists at her.

After I left the two lane road for the interstate last night, light
traffic.... but LLBs all over the place. Several instances of 3 idiots
driving side by side with nobody in front of them for distances best
measured in at least fractions of a mile.
