With inspiration from Michigan-based Yahoo! greatlakesroads regular and
occasional MTR contributor Barry Camp, I have created the ultimate
calrog.com-ad-revenue-killing weapon. I have been using this for months
myself, and with the recent crapflood of updates for one picture at a
time, I believe it's time to share it with MTR.
What I have done is edited my Windows HOSTS file (note the lack of a
file extension) to redirect any attempts to go to calrog.com to the
invalid IP address 0.0.0.0, causing it to come up as "not found." The
HOSTS file, for those who don't know, is simply a text file that
associates certain web site addresses (e.g., calrog.com) with IP
addresses (e.g., 139.46.247.91 -- that's not krlz, I'm just pulling an
example IP out of my a.s). Your browser attempts to check the HOSTS file
first when you type in a text-based URL, and if it can find the URL, it
saves having to check with an upstream DNS server.
Unlike the HOSTS file Barry offers on his site, which he says blocks
over 700,000 ad sites, I offer mine with only five entries -- the one
matching 127.0.0.1 to "localhost" (your computer) that is already in
Windows' HOSTS file, and four that block calrog.com and any of its
derivatives. So, without further ado, here's the URL for it and how to
properly install it:
http://www.phatpage.org/etc/hosts
It goes in the following places:
Windows XP/2003/Vista: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Windows NT/2000: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
Windows 95/98/ME: c:\windows
Linux/*nix systems: /etc/
Mac OSX: /private/etc
Mac OS 9 and earlier: System Folder:Preferences, or System Folder
Enjoy your freedom from the crappy videos, poorly-stitched proprietary
engines, and the general sux0r that is calrog.com. :)
And yes, I know one can just avoid clicking links, but this way is more
fun and protects you when you're tempted. ;-)

Excellent suggestion, Larry!
