...but now we find that some gas stations are shorting people on the
gas they are getting.

From the article, "Comparing the actual volume of gasoline pumped with
the amount indicated on pump gauges, they found each pump shorted
customers by as much as one quart for every five gallons, [Agriculture
Commissioner Tommy] Irvin said"
So, if a typical fill-up is about 10 gallons or so, that means that
people are being shorted about 0.5 gallons per fill-up. And given that
these stations at exits 1 and 6 on IH95 in Georgia are extremely busy
(I have stopped at the cisco station at exit 1 for a snack at the DQ
but not for gas many times (but never again) and there is always a
steady stream of cars pulling up to and pulling out from the pumps),
that makes for a tidy sum of money that they are making and not giving
anything in return.

Cool...make Aunt Judy pay out the nose to keep that beater fueled fast
enough to overcome any leak in the tank.

Unfortunately, this is nothing new. Most gas stations are honest, but
even in the honest ones, their gas pumps need to be calibrated on
occasion. In some areas, there are heavy fines for shorting customers on
gas at the pump, but the gas stations have to be caught.

1 quart? That's pretty ballsy. If I nearly run empty on my 12
gallon tank, I'd be putting around 14 gallons into it!
