Traffic at 50 mph wouldn't be that far above normal--I would expect a
quick glance to be sufficient.
If the traffic is 130 mph, well, the glance might not cut it because
the traffic is so far away. A glance would reveal a car a few blocks
away, not something that was about to get you creamed.
I've seen those slothy right turns you describe. I don't like them
either. Go if you must, but get going, 'cuz I'm on my way.
Generally, though, they shouldn't go. ROR is allowed only if it's
clear. If the normal speed traffic has to brake, the turner blew it.

No. Just old and tired.

Sounds like fun, if they follow the regular rules. Judging by the
video, that's not a requirement.

There's too many.

What a lot of people do is flip on their signal, start to drift over,
and THEN start looking in the mirror. I suspect that's what the
Trucker in the video did. By the time he realized there was faster
traffic approaching, he was already half way into the lane. Most
people also make no effort to gauge the speed of approaching traffic
(or they just don't care). I can't count the number of times some
Sloth has changed lanes into my path, forcing me to slow down in order
to avoid a collision. As you said about the Sloth right-turn-on-red,
if the other guy has to brake, you made a mistake.

And lazy! You could have hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" and gotten that link.

It's NOT a race - nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more.

Have you heard about the cop in Minnesota who once pulled over more
than a dozen speeding Corvettes? I have a scan of the newspaper
article around here somewhere...
