Geez - 130 mph!!! And you're worried about what the trucker is doing?

Here we go again. Just because the other guy is speeding doesn't
absolve YOU of your responsibilities!

I am not saying that it does. But come on, the guy doing a 130 on that
narrow heavily travel road is a complete and utter moron. He is an accident
waiting to happen. His closing rate on the trucker was well above anything a
reaonable person would expect. He was damn lucky the trucker realized that
some insane driver was closing at such a high rate and aborted the lane
change. Clearly the trucker did check his mirror, or there could have been
an accident.

Agreed. And he's not the only moron out there. Which is why mirror
checking and learning to judge the closing speed of other vehicles is
so important. It's part and parcel of "defensive driving."

Defensive driving would also include NOT doing stupid things that
require someone else to cover the offender's butt.
When you check a mirror, you frequently glance back to see what's "in
range".  If a vehicle is back a ways, you may not anticipate that it's
doing 130.  (I don't know where that figure came from, nor whether
it's mph, kph, furlongs per fortnight or cheerios per bowl.)

So, what's a "Gumball 3000"?  Is this an official race (not likely on
normal streets with normal traffic) or some renegade, unofficial race?
Judging by all the radar detectors, etc on the dash, it seems like the
latter.  In which case, jail 'em all.

I never said Alex Roy was driving defensively in that video.

Yes, it's a common mistake, and not just in that situation. People
take a "snapshot" - no more than a brief glance - and see that there
are no cars close by. They then ASSUME that all those far-away cars
are going to STAY far away forever. It's like the guy who rolls up to
a red light, looks left, sees that all the cars are stopped, and then
proceeds to make a Slothy right turn JUST as the light turns green for
all those stopped cars on his left. Or the idiot who blithely pulls
out of the strip mall driveway directly in the path of oncoming 50 MPH
traffic.

Traffic at 50 mph wouldn't be that far above normal--I would expect a
quick glance to be sufficient.
If the traffic is 130 mph, well, the glance might not cut it because
the traffic is so far away.  A glance would reveal a car a few blocks
away, not something that was about to get you creamed.

I've seen those slothy right turns you describe.  I don't like them
either.  Go if you must, but get going, 'cuz I'm on my way.
Generally, though, they shouldn't go.  ROR is allowed only if it's
clear.  If the normal speed traffic has to brake, the turner blew it.

No.  Just old and tired.

Sounds like fun, if they follow the regular rules.  Judging by the
video, that's not a requirement.

What a lot of people do is flip on their signal, start to drift over,
and THEN start looking in the mirror. I suspect that's what the
Trucker in the video did. By the time he realized there was faster
traffic approaching, he was already half way into the lane. Most
people also make no effort to gauge the speed of approaching traffic
(or they just don't care). I can't count the number of times some
Sloth has changed lanes into my path, forcing me to slow down in order
to avoid a collision. As you said about the Sloth right-turn-on-red,
if the other guy has to brake, you made a mistake.

And lazy! You could have hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" and gotten that link.

It's NOT a race - nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more.

Have you heard about the cop in Minnesota who once pulled over more
than a dozen speeding Corvettes? I have a scan of the newspaper
article around here somewhere...

Speeding..? Looks very much like Germany, so it's possible that happened
on a speed limitless stretch. Besides, 130 mph isn't that fast. Drove
faster a week ago in my own BMW in the rain/sleet.
