Maybe someday there can be a road meet in Littleton. All we have to do is find the most decrepit POS on the road and keep honking at it untill either it stops or the driver's head explodes....

As I suspected. Road rage. You view everything as a challenge. Perhaps its time to turn in your license and pick up a bus pass before you kill someone, or pick a fight with some nut with a gun and get killed yourself.
Would it ever occur to you that someone behind you honking at you might be doing so because your wheel was falling off or you left your briefcase on top of your car?

John A. Weeks III - 15 Mar 2008 21:30 GMT > More proof of just how stupid these deadly and criminal speeders are. You > try to intimidate other drivers and they'll do just the opposite of what > you want. Here is the deal. Honking is a signal of some emergency situation that the honker has observed. If someone honks at me, and I am not aware of what the emergency is, the only logical course of action is to slow down. After all, once I figure out what the emergency is, I might have to stop or take evasive action, so it is always prudent to slow down to prepare when some other driver is kind enough to alert you to an emergency.

So if you pull out in front of someone and they honk at you, the logical course of action in your opinion is to slow down in front of them?

This is one of those situations where the problem will resolve itself. We just have to wait for someone with a gun to come across Mr. Weeks and then they'll be one less idiot on the road.
If he thinks intentionally irritating people by driving irresponsibly or inappropriately, he is in for quite a surprise, I think.

If you are not aware of what the emergency is, speeding up and crashing into it would be stupid. So yes, slowing down is the proper course of action when someone honks at you. In the scenario above, perhaps you can stop before you block the lane when pulling out in front of someone. And if it is a semi coming, I'd much rather have only the nose of my car smashed than getting broadsided in the driver door by a huge truck.

> If you are not aware of what the emergency is, speeding up and > crashing into it would be stupid. So yes, slowing down is the > proper course of action when someone honks at you. I think you need to be more aware of your surroundings when you drive. If you hear someone honk, you can usually tell which direction it's coming from. If it's coming from behind and you just pulled out onto a road, then stopping or slowing down is the worst thing you can do. If you're taking a left turn and hear someone honking from your left, I'd hate to see what happens if you stop right before you're broadsided.
> In the scenario above, perhaps you can stop before you block > the lane when pulling out in front of someone. Or your could end up stopping while taking a left turn making it very difficult for through traffic to avoid hitting the side of your car. If you keep going, then they can aim for your previous location, making it easier to avoid hitting you.
It depends on the situation and where the sound is coming from. Stopping or slowing down is not always the best course of action. If you're aware of your surroundings when driving, not only will you avoid such situations in the first place, but even if you don't, you can engage in the appropriate action(s).

But the fact is that everyone makes mistakes from time to time, and everyone has something happen around them in traffic from time to time that they cannot quite figure out in real time. Saying that someone shouldn't make a mistake is unrealistic when dealing with humans. The trick is that when something does happen where someone beeps there horn due to you not being aware or having made a mistake, make sure that you always have an out and always give the other person an out so you can avoid a crash. Slowing down makes that all that much easier since it gives you more time and makes any sudden maneuvers all that much easier. This is just basic common sense.

I'm not sure I've ever honked at someone in a situation where their appropriate response would be to slow down. It's often because they're going waaaaay too slow already, and not using available turnouts, or because they did something dangerous like cut me off. In both cases, speeding up would be more appropriate.
Furthermore, I think when people get honked at, they almost always know exactly why it's happening--they know if they're going 15mph under the speed limit with cars behind them, or if they just turned out of a side street without looking carefully. If they routinely respond by hitting the brakes, they're copping an attitude, and deserve worse than being honked at.

A gentle tap when the cis drifting backwards toward you because the driver is looking on the backseat for his preyzels another. Opening a drivers door while looking forward and not back deserves something still stronger and so on.
Hey Saddan, when you refer to speeders, are you refering to someone a legal expert might call a speed or to someone a safety professional might can a speeder. Seldom is a 'de jure' speeder a 'defacto' speeder, but a "defacto speeder" is almost a "de jure" speeder, as are some very safe drivers.
Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS - 16 Mar 2008 17:44 GMT > Here is the deal. Honking is a signal of some emergency situation > that the honker has observed. Like hell it's about emergencies. I honk my horn if i see another driver doing something illegal or dangerous. That's why you should never honk at slow drivers since they make the roads safer.

You have never driven through a mountainous state, then. If I am driving the speed limit and take a sharp switchback to find some JACKASS going 20 miles under the speed limit they ARE NOT making the raods safer!

Driving faster than the distance that you can see is about as dangerous as it gets. This is called overdriving, such as when at night you drive faster than the distance that your headlights will illuminate. And if there are tight swtichback curves, then people should slow down a be going 20 MPH less than the speed limit. That is simple common sense to slow down for tight curves.

Actually, some did. I can remember adjusting a little screw on Bosch horns on VWs. Work orders actually had customer requests to make their horns louder (rarely softer).
Anyway, I've never used a horn on any of my vehicles. If I had enough time to use the horn, I could take evasive action. By the time I was done, it seemed kinda pointless to use my horn, except maybe to vent my frustration. If I wasn't directly involved, I didn't want to cause a distraction as people generally look to where they thought the noise came from. -- Galen Hekhuis ghekhuis@earthlink.net Illiterate?
